My new heart sig

The funny thing about love ...

Valentine’s day is almost upon us. I know that all of us are not looking forward to a holiday that promises to be a club exclusively for those in love, dating or merely tolerating a relationship so long as the heart shaped box filled with chocolates arrives on that evening. Some of course have grander ideas of love and commitment on this day. I am here to fill in the blanks of those who do not have their heads in the clouds over this day. Yes, you know who your are. You feel excluded from the Hallmark greetings showered all over the airwaves. It is time to take a proactive position .

Once upon a Valentine’s Day, dreary ...

Letter from the editor

Years ago, when I was a single mother and Valentine’s Day came along, I planned a party that would guarantee fun, fine food and, family, while celebrating my mother’s fiftieth birthday. Now, my mom was not born on Valentine’s day, no, that would make this celebration more normal if that were true. Her birthday falls on March first. My mother being the nosy person she is would have assumed a party in her honor if I planned it closer to her birthday. I wanted this to be the biggest surprise of her life, thus February fourteenth, the day of love, was the perfect cover. (It also made good use of a day that I felt did not include me, and, my relatives would have to give up their lovey-dovey plans to attend the Matriarch’s fiftieth birthday celebration.) *Smirk*

I set everything in motion, inviting her sister and brother-in-law, who lived in the Chicago area; we lived in New England. I got all the local relatives involved with preparing certain food items or bringing adult beverages. I planned to cook my specialties; I even got my mother to cook something for her own party. Hey, I had to do it, or she would have been suspicious! I told her it was a little Valentine’s Day party for her, me and my daughter. I added that my brother and his girlfriend wanted to join us, so she would cook more! *Wink* No, she didn’t ask why my brother and his girl would want to spend V-Day with us! *Rolleyes*

Okay, Webwitch, why should we care that you planned a surprise birthday party for your mom on Valentine’s Day? We don’t find that very amusing.

Let me continue; it will all become clearer.*Wink*

That morning, when my mother went off to work, my brother had the job of changing the sheets on her bed . My mother inevitably would insist that guest couples spend the night in her room on the big bed, and she would take the sofa bed. I did not want her to have to rush to change sheets that night, after the party ended, so that her sister and brother-in-law could have a place to sleep. It was a great plan! Well almost, because it never occurred to me that my mother would decide to take a little nap when she returned from work. Saturday was a half-day for her at the dentist’s office.

So, there I was, working my witchy little butt off trying to cook and decorate the apartment for her party, when I get a very disturbing phone call.

“WW, something strange is going on around here!”

“What’s the problem, Ma?”

“When I woke up this morning, my sheets were pink, now, they are blue floral. I don‘t know how that happened.”

“Ma--MA! you are not making sense. You must have imagined that you had the pink sheets on the bed. Why on earth would your sheets change while you were at work? Ma, I think you are losing it. You should keep this little experience to yourself. You’ve got me worried, now, Ma! The next thing you know, you will be collecting cats and dining with them at your table. You know how some lonely widows, get, right Ma?” *Smirk*

Needless to say, she was a bit miffed at my glossing over the situation and telling her she was losing her sensibilities. However, she accepted that she may have been mistaken about those sheets.

My mother managed to cook up a storm and show up that night to the biggest surprise of her life. She stood at the door while everyone yelled out Happy Birthday!!! The tears formed in her eyes, her knees weakened, and we sat her in the chair of honor.

I’ll never forget the look on her face. It was her first, true surprise party.

When she composed herself, she noticed a huge refrigerator box in the middle of the room. She inquired about its contents. I told her she would have to lift the lid to see her gift. With a little help, the huge lid was moved, exposing my aunt and uncle, sitting inside the box, holding up glasses of champagne and yelling surprise!

My mother knew that night that she was not the lonely widow left by the wayside. She realized her family loved her, and, her sister cared enough to drive from Chicago to Boston to attend her fiftieth birthday celebration.

So, folks, there is more than one way to celebrate Valentine’s Day. Love can be represented in different ways. Warm another’s heart and heal the spirit. Laughing with a friend or family member can enrich your life as well as theirs.

Oh, by the way, try that sheet trick on some old dame. I swear, I nearly peed myself laughing when I hung up the phone.*Laugh*

Hey, it’s been great, folks. Thank you for letting me into your mailbox. *Delight*

Until next time--laugh hard; laugh often!

Ta,
WW

Dear Webbie - Sure enough, no sooner had I arrived at the destination - known as your home and grounds - did I discover what you meant when you texted that the place looked like an atomic weapon had just been unleashed! The devastation was not to be believed!!!!!!! I am proud to have hit the ground running and in true Semper Fi style, arrived to discover the house was a cool 42 degrees, the grounds an absolute Ground Zero of Mother Nature's wrath. I am so glad I came to help out!! - Dr Jim

You were my hero, that day, Doc! Thanks for all of your help. *Delight*

Ah ha! Well, I've never been in a ice storm, but I've seen the pictures. Where I live we get snow. piles of it. and then it melts a little during the day and freezes overnight. leaving us with a very nice ice sheet that covers everything. so i can sympathise. and you can always laugh later.

Laughing is the best medicine, Andromeda. *Bigsmile*

Thank you for your feedback. It is greatly appreciated. *Delight*
