About This Newsletter

I write short stories, but they often gather dust in a file, either a file drawer or computer file. I enter them in contests, use them for filler, or sometimes submit them for anthologies. But short stories deserve more.

Finding a Home for Short Stories

Short stories are not in great demand by publishers of any kind. Some of the national magazines that were once known for containing short stories either folded or removed fiction from their pages. However, some periodicals still include fiction, and I found some that do. Some research through Google on the part of authors can find more information about the magazines and their guidelines.

More fiction offerings are possible for Science Fiction, Fantasy, and Horror genre than most others. Let’s start with some of those publishers of short stories. Checking each publications guidelines and discovering the exact genre accepted is important.

Magazine of Fantasy and Science Fiction – http://www.sfsite.com/fsf/
Asimov’s – http://www.asimovs.com/
Analog – http://www.analogsf.com/
Weird Tales – http://www.weirdtales.net/

Literary magazines accepting fiction and which pay include the following:
Agni – http://bu.edu/agni
Crazyhorse – http://crazyhorse.cofc.edu
Downstate Story – http://www.wiu.edu/users/mfgeh/dss
Event – http://even.douglas.bc.ca
The Gettysburg Review – http://www.gettysburgreview.com

Mystery and short stories are wanted int he following:
The Strand Magazine – http://www.strandmag.com/
Indigenous Fiction – http://www.marketlist.com/writers_markets.asp?id=80 /
Harboiled – http://www.hardboiledmagazine.com/
Ellery Queen’s Mystery Magazine – http://www.themysteryplace.com/eqmm/

A final resource for short stories is Abandoned Towers. Authors of stories accepted for the print version are paid. Material accepted for the online version is not. The publisher sent the following information:

Abandoned Towers is the Reader's Magazine, so we accept a wide range of content. We are looking for short stories on the following subjects:
Fantasy (including RPG themed fantasy)
Science Fiction
Westerns
Romance
Adventure
Thrillers
Mystery
Humor

Children's Lit.
Alternate History

Before submitting anything, please visit the website at http://www.cyberwizardproductions.com/AbandonedTowers/ Read and follow writer's guidelines.

Viv - good look at character and setting to build suspense. I agree - setting is very important and I think you really have to "nail" it in a short story because you have a limited amount of words to tell the story. What helps me is using the Internet to research graphics for a story. Thanks for using "Holding Out for a Hero."

You're welcome. I'm glad you enjoyed the newsletter, too, Steph.

Great advice for writing suspense in a short story. It can be a challenge, but you have given excellent pointers on where to start! Thanks for highlighting one of my stories.

You're welcome. I try to highlight different writers, spread the "glory" around, when I can.

Thanks, Artemis. I noticed a question you asked about the copyright notice at the bottom of each of your items. That protects your work under whatever name you are using on the site.
