About This Newsletter

"Infinite wrath, and infinite despair?
Which way I fly is Hell; myself am Hell;
And in the lowest deep of a lower deep
Still threatening to devour me opens wide,
To which the Hell I suffer seems a Heaven"

John Milton (1608-1674) Paradise Lost

Hello, I am Joy Author Icon, your guest editor for the Horror/Scary Newsletter this week. *Smile*

Welcome to the Horror/Scary Newsletter

Just suppose you have written the ultimate horror story and you are sure it deserves to be published. Where would you go and what kind of a market would you choose?

If you are sure your story is excellent and you've had some previous publishing success, then you could try tapping into the pro markets, like Black Gate, Black October, Cemetery Dance etc. Most of these markets ask for strict word counts, about 5000 to 10,000 words, and they pay something in between 3 to 8 cents per word. If your story is a good one but is published before, reprinting it may be possible in lower paying markets.

Lower paying markets start with Semi-Pro publications like Apex, Grimoire, and Cryptopedia. These markets pay 2 to 3 cents per word, and they may give you a contributor copy if you ask for it. Even lower paying are those markets that pay 1 cent per word, like Albedo One, Blood, Blade & Thruster Magazine, Dark Animus, Dark Krypt, etc.

The last category includes the non-paying and token paying markets. Token paying markets like Ballista, Allegory, Far Sector, etc., pay a low flat rate between $5 and $20 per story. Non-paying horror markets pay nothing; yet, they give you exposure and the joy of seeing your story in print. Night Terrors, Saucy Tales, Shroud, Underworld Tales are such publications. Some of these may offer advertising space for your day job, or a serious critique, or a contributor's copy; however, do not count on it.

You can download a listing for all these markets here, for free:

http://horror.fictionfactor.com/horrormarketguide.html

Aside from these markets, you might like to place your story in a horror anthology. Some of these anthologies offer payment; others do not.

A few links for the submission to the anthologies are:

http://www.morriganbooks.com/?page_id=120
http://www.gravesidetales.com
http://www.clockworkphoenix.com/

All these markets expect something special about your storytelling, and their editors require well-developed, believable characters, an interesting storyline, and a strong conflict. No matter how gory and dark your work may be, stories filled with violence and titillating scenes that have little to do with the plot are immediately rejected. In other words, stick to the basics of storytelling and do not overdo anything.

If you have written a novel-length horror story, you may consider submitting your work to a regular publishing house or a horror print publisher like Diabolic Publications.

http://www.diabolicpublications.com/submissions.htm

Or you may consider an E-publisher like the Gothic Press.
Some of the links for publishing guidelines of E-publishers are:

http://www.angelfire.com/az2/eraserheadpress/about.html

In addition, do not forget that articles on horror writing or true-to-life stories may be accepted by most publications.

Then, markets for all genre writers are listed here:

http://www.marketlist.com/writers_index/

Also, horror.org is the site for horror writers' association. It provides three classes of membership: Active, Affiliate, and Associate. If you would like to join, take a look at their regulations and find out if you qualify.

Last, a few books that may be of help with your horror writing are:

*Bullet* On Writing Horror: A Handbook by the Horror Writers Association
*Bullet* Writing Horror by Mort Castle
*Bullet* How to Write Tales of Horror, Fantasy and Science Fiction by J. N. Williamson
*Bullet* On Writing - A Memoir of the Craft by Stephen King

          Have a wonderfully scary Halloween!
