This week's topic was taken from a suggestion sent in by Summer... who's she again? : "How about a definition of the word "activity"? Most newbies think it connotes "raffle" or "contest" and don't consider "sig shoppe" or "cNote shoppe". Thanks."
Thanks for sending in this great
The word "activity" isn't one that would be easy to define. The Marriam-Webster Online Dictionary includes six definitions for the word alone and more for phrases including the word activity. None of them have Writing.Com in mind, though. So, for this, I've decided to people here what they all think the word means.
"Activities @ Writing.Com" [E] by Writing.Com Support -- Activities are auctions, raffles, discussions, events and gatherings.
Robert Waltz , from an in-progress item about the genres available on the site -- Is this an item that promotes contributions, actions or feedback from others - besides reading and reviewing? If so, the Activity genre may be appropriate; if not, consider using a different genre.
Summer... who's she again? -- An activity is something you take part in, a group event. It has to have a point--like a raffle, there's a winner; a contest, a winner as well; a sig shoppe, you buy a sig; a cNote shoppe, you send a cNote. An activity is different from an item in that you actually participate.
Pass it on -- An activity is where people can participate in some form. It's something of interest that the people participating have in common. It could be a closed activity for a particular group or an open one inviting all of writing.com to join. I feel that activities help bring the writing.com community together.
Mumsy -- An activity is a chance to interact with others on the site whom you might not ordinarily meet. It's also a chance to stretch the boundaries of your writing.
Pen Name -- 1. Short-term, with a definite starting and ending date.
2. Sponsored by one or more WDC members.
3. Has an element of fun! Smile
4. Participants required to sign up.
5. Activity's purpose is to benefit participants and other parties in some way, usually involving reviewing.
6. Rules and guidelines are defined, and each participant who follows the rules will get some manner of reward, usually GP's, reviews, or awardicons.
And, I'll end with my own definition -- I consider activities here to include raffles, auctions, contests, games, creative campfires, crossword puzzles, word searches, the chat room, the IM console, and sometimes groups. While my list up there is probably a bit incomplete, it basically boils down to being able to participate in some way. There may be many out there that don't agree with me, but I don't consider sig shops or cNote collections to be activities, as there is not any interaction or action involved in using them. (...besides the monetary -err make that Gift Point- transaction, that is)

In honor of the 4th of July holiday in my part of the world, here are a few related items:
Get your virtual pencils sharpened -- its time for a word search!
A couple of cute cNotes for your sending pleasure.
And here are a few others taken from "Activities @ Writing.Com" [E], "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" [E], and "The Marketplace" [13+], as well as items sent in by readers:
Can you create a story with memorable characters?
A humorous new activity that hasn't yet had much participation.
A group of members interested in the (unofficial) Reviewing Newsletter.
A fund-raising event is coming up. Here's a chance to learn more and be a part of it.

This newsletter was very helpful. I have been thinking about starting a contest sometime this summer for The Magnificent Seven tv show. I haven't started it yet because I am doing volunteer work and then going to work this June.
Keep up the good work,
Ash
Thanks for writing in, Ash! Best of luck with your contest.
