Letter from the editor

Sitting on the balcony of my hotel room watching the sun rise over Lake Huron, over looking Mackinac Island. Hard to focus on a newsletter. I keep thinking about all we've crammed into this weekend and we are only on day 3. I knew I'd be writing this newsletter over this weekend and so I'd been keeping it in the back of my mind since we left. What to write it on. And one again it all seems to come down to details, experiences, descriptions....the stocks in trade of a writer.

Should I ever want to include a zip line or a canopy bridge (one of those NARROW, cable held up bridges where you are walking forty feet up on a 5 inch wide plank) I can describe how much is wobbles, how it sways back and forth with folks walking on it, how it bounces when a fearless (read that 'crazy') kid decides to jump up and down on it, and just how tightly one's hands can clench to the cables! I told my self not to look down. The guide says, 'Now I want everyone to experience the eagle's vantage point, so look down to the gorge and stream below.' OK, that is a LONG way down. And I'm standing here clinging to a thin cable because why? Oh yes...because he's still chatting and there are people in front of me. THAT was an interesting experience. Now there's nothing left but the zip drive.......The ride was exhilarating... the jump off the platform some fifty foot up was not.

History...the mighty Mackinac Bridge...all five miles of it...Ft Michilimackinac (silent c and means 'Great Turtle)...and Mackinac Island. 'Somewhere In Time,' my all time favorite movie was filmed on Mackinac Island and although it took some wandering, I found the gazebo from the movie. The island itself....horse drawn carriages being drawn by Percheron and Belgian horses clopping past The Grand Hotel. The Lilac Festival was going on...Lilacs in mid-June...how cool is that...but more, I'd never really thought about the fact that lilacs might bloom at vastly different times depending where you are....something to file away for future reference!

We lucked out that our day on the island was the fiftieth anniversary of the fort and so were treated to fife and drum corps and bagpipes, the governor and some awesome Irish dancing.

One of the nicest experiences thus far happened when the weather closed in and we retreated to our hotel room. From this same balcony we watch the storm come over head. We saw Mackinac Island swallowed by the mists, a double rainbow over the island and some phenomenal skies.

I've taken tons of notes and have at least fifteen ideas to write about. I've taken something like two hundred pictures, seen a cow elk and almost grilled a turkey with the car. I've crossed the Mackinack Bridge and met people from Germany, Canada, Scotland, Italy and France. Learned tons of history and should I ever write a story set on Mackinac Island, I can step back in time and know what I'm writing about!
We still have a week to go!

Ask & Answer

I received lots of feedback about my newsletter on stereotypes and who did what. I am pleased so many of you enjoyed that little exercise in observation/judging by surface info.

I am using a borrowed laptop on this trip and I can't figure out how to cut and paste. My apologies to those who wrote in and thus should have been included here....next time :)

Have a good week everyone....off to Paradise, Pictured Rocks and the Wreck of the Edmond Fitzgerald.....from the road in Michigan, this is the wandering fyn.
