About This Newsletter

Reading a horror story, one that keeps you on the edge of your seat until the last page, is what every horror fan dreams of. Being scared, to the point that sleep is almost impossible, makes the read all the more worthwhile. Does that make us crazy? You bet!!!

My name is Darkin, and I’m your host this week for the Horror Newsletter.

The Unknown

Monsters are scary. There's no question about that. They slink in the darkness waiting for the perfect moment to strike. Yep, pretty scary.

Now, take away the monster and add an unknown element. Something invisible and deadly. Something no one has encountered before.

Now that is really scary!

Take the new movie The Happening as an example. It starts off on a seemingly normal day. People are out having fun, doing their shopping, and just living their lives. Then some of them start behaving oddly. They can't seem to speak. Then they can't move. Then, without a reason, they start killing themselves, leaving the survivors to wonder why and try to escape the same fate.

This isn't a new plot. An unknown enemy has been used in plenty of books and movies - from The Andromeda Strain to Stephan King's The Mist. Each time, the threat is something no one has seen before, or knows how to defeat.

Fear of the unknown is something shared by all living creatures, including humans. When bad things happen, we want to understand why. When that understanding alludes us, that is when the fear comes. Not knowing doesn't make the bad thing less scary.

I think it makes it more scary!

Thank you for taking the time to read. Happy Writing!
