Letter from the editor

REALITY TELEVISION

With the writer's strike entering its third month (or is it the fourth? or second? I can't keep track, I just know it's been a long time!) the networks are responding to the crisis by adding more Reality Television and Game Shows to their weekly line-ups. If you are a Reality TV or Game Show fan, this is great news for you. But if you are not fond of that particular genre of television, then this is going to be a very long winter for you, I'm afraid! Maybe you can rent some DVD's of shows you always wanted to watch but didn't have time for in the past -- or become a PBS fan!*Laugh*

People either love Reality TV or hate it (or if they love it, they don't admit that they do). Personally I am embarrassed to admit that I am a bit of a Reality TV show addict. I don't watch all of them, mind you, or else my husband would stage an intervention -- but I do watch quite a few of them. In fact, a few years ago I even wrote a chained haiku poem about my addiction:

"Reality TV AnonymousOpen in new Window.

My name is SophY
and I'm a Reality
TV-aholic.

HI SOPHY! I can't
help myself - Survivor, The
Amazing Race. But

my BIGGEST SHAME is
Big Brother. <sigh> At least I
learn survival skills

on Survivor, see
the world on The Amazing
Race. But Big Brother?

I'm so ashamed. OOPS!
I have to go! The Mole is
on in ten minutes!

*Laugh*

I have standards -- they aren't very high but I do have them! *Wink* So I tend to avoid reality shows on Fox (except for American Idol) or VH1 and MTV because they can be just, well, icky. But I regularly tune in to "The Amazing Race " and "Survivor " over on CBS, as well as "Dancing with the Stars" on ABC. And yes, I've even been known to tune in "The Apprentice" on NBC just to check out how the Donald's hair is doing.

But my biggest shame is that I watch "Big Brother" on CBS. I content myself with the knowledge that it's only on during the summer, when I have less work to do and more time to sit around watching mindless television. So I justify my addiction by pretending that it's just a guilty pleasure I indulge in every once in a while in order to watch these mismatched, dysfunctional house guests bicker, drink, and dump iced tea on each other's heads. (And sleep, they sleep A LOT!) But that's not true, I don't just tune in occasionally -- I never miss an episode! Sometimes I even watch the live feeds <hangs head in shame and disgrace >

They say that the first step to recovery is to admit that I have a problem ... and I DO have a problem. But my problem is not "Big Brother" -- my problem is the writer's strike . Because of the writer's strike, not only are they airing a special winter version of "Big Brother in addition to their regular summer house of craziness, but they are putting on even more Reality TV shows than ever, some created for the networks as a direct result of the strike. I've provided a link below to show you what I'm talking about (it lists all the Reality TV shows scheduled for the next few months).

Who knows? Maybe this onslaught of Reality TV will finally cure me of my addiction. Maybe having nothing to watch but real people making fools of themselves on national television will finally break my nasty habit. Oh hell, who am I kidding ... I'm sunk for sure! *Laugh*
