Charity Work

There are groups around Writing.Com for nearly every purpose imaginable, many which collect Gift Points for one thing or another. So, how do you pick one (or more) to support?

Here are a few things I look at:

*Note1*Purpose Of Group
So - what is the point of the group? When looking at this, I also look to find out what the Gift Points are being used for. Some groups have visions that I believe strongly in, but do not participate in (or plan to start) anything that requires Gift Points.

*Note2*Age of Group and Group Leader
I find it typically to be best to support a group that has been active for at least a few months. While it is not a guarantee, this helps assure that the group will continue to be around.
However, if run by someone known to be credible and active with groups, the group's age isn't typically as important.

*Note3*Current Gift Point Status
Does the group need Gift Points right away or do they have enough to last for years based on their current supply and activity level?
Is the group actively seeking ways to keep funds coming in or hoping for random donors to stay afloat?

From April Sunday Author Icon:
What a good idea to write this in bold. Bolded black letters are possible to read from a distance while cleaning off the coffee table. Way to go. I wish more poeple would use this easy-as-pie mode of writing.
That was completely unintentional and beyond my control. Actually, I do not recommend writing most thing in all bold! But, I am glad you benefited from this!

From esprit Author Icon:
Tigger, your good advice on using WritingML was interesting and it's always a pleasure to read a well written editorial. Thank you.
Thank you!

From smoochdog Author Icon:
Why is it so hard to find contest that you want to enter. For example I want to enter the Ocotber Quotation Prompt Contest but when I enter that in the Power Search it comes up empty and when I use the Item Jumps links I only get the 50 most recent contests. Help! Thanks!
While I have already responded to this question personally, I figured others may benefit from the answer. The contest desired seems to be "Quotation Inspiration: Official ContestOpen in new Window. [ASR] (and this month's official contest is "Short Shots: Official WDC ContestOpen in new Window. [ASR].) The link in Item Jumps ("Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. [E]) is not the 50 most recently created contests, but is the 50 most recently linked contests. Any Writing.Com Writing contest may be linked there by any member.

From terryjroo:
Tigg, good newsletter on WritingML. A fine balance exists between the good, the bad and the ugly. One thing you didn't mention that I see often is inconsistency. When setting up an activity or contest, if you want someone to be able to follow along, be consistent. When you break up areas into sections use the same color, size and emoticons (i.e. stars, check marks, etc.) for each complete section or for each section divider. Follow a pattern. For instance, use stars around the section headings so they stand out and make them all red, size 4 text, then within the sections use blue for the text. Just sharing what has worked for me. *Smile*
That is a good point, Ter. Thanks for reminding me! Just to expand, though, sections all don't necessarily need to have the same color, as there are other ways to be consistent. In an activity I just concluded, the sections went back and forth between two colors. Also, consistency doesn't need to mean "exactly the same" so long as the differences make sense together. Thanks for thinking and providing such useful additional information!

From MetaphorSquared Author Icon:
Yours is the first newsletter I've read since getting my new account here, and I have to say after looking through contests on this site, that your insights into the use of tags was timely. I hope contest designers/hosts take the Less Is More part to heart. Also, I loved the Easter Bunny line. Very funny.
Keep up the good work!

Thanks for your comments; I'm glad you enjoyed my newsletter. Welcome (back?) to Writing.Com. And happy to have amused you with my comedy -- it took me all week to come up with that*Pthb* (just kidding!)

From Acme Author Icon:
