Spiritual Tune-Up
Let's face it. Life gets in the way. Everyday living: the things we have to do and the things we want to do, pressures and demands, expectations and dreams, health, family, and work. All these things are necessary, and yet so often can pull us away from our spiritual needs. We can be so busy worrying about little Joseph's illness that we can forget to connect with God and ask for his help.
The same is true of any faith - there is the capacity to lose touch with our spiritual needs and focus on the physical world. There are many times, I believe, where if we stopped to tune into our spiritual beings, then we could cope a lot better with life's everchanging flow.
Before you give yourself a tune-up, there's a few questions you'll need to know the answer to.
1. How important is your faith to you?
2. Do you believe it has the power to calm and help you?
3. Do you understand that looking after yourself is a key to being able to help others?
Okay, those questions would have helped you to determine whether you want or need a spiritual tune-up. Now you should be ready to tackle the steps to rejuvenating your spiritual life.
So let's go!
Start by praying. You cannot rejuvenate a spiritual life without communicating with the spiritual 'head'. I realise that praying is generally thought of as a Christian practice, and that is my experience. I love talking with my God. However, I believe all faiths utilise prayer or something akin to prayer.
Examine your behaviour and attitudes. Are there any things you feel uncomfortable or guilty about? Are you avoiding doing things you know you should, or vice versa? What areas of your life are not the kind of person you truly want to be? Submit these in prayer and make a decision to try and change. For those who follow Christ there is the knowledge that God helps us fight these things when we are willing to change.
Read. For Christians, reading the Bible is a very important part of their spiritual life and an opportunity for God to speak to us through His word. I am not sure of other faiths, but the Koran comes to mind. I am sure there are other documents/research/guides that different faiths have as part of their doctrine, so this applies to anyone.
Make some 'quiet time' for yourself. This can be spent in meditation, reading, or prayer. It can also be spent in self-reflection or just closing your mind to everything and resting. Life is not only incredibly busy, but also very noisy. Noise is a distraction, an interference. By making quiet time, we are providing an opportunity where we can listen to what our spirit is trying to tell us, and for our spirits to connect with the Holy Spirit (or whatever you believe in).
Realise that every part of our life is spiritual. We can not separate our spirit from our bodies or our will. It is a trio that forms human life. We may sit in church one day and go disrespect our teacher on Monday at school. This is distressing to our spirits as it is a conflict between belief and action. This leads to guilt and a break down of faith. With this in mind, the final step in the tune-up is to look at your daily taks through the eyes of the spirit. I suggest you try doing it for a whole day. It will present an entirely different aspect and attitude to your daily living that may not have been obvious beforehand. It heightens your awareness of your actions versus spirit. It will bring deeper meaning to things. Doing the dishes is mundane at best. But if one focuses on spiritual matters or considers the task a spiritual act, then it is not so burdensome. eg. busy life attitude: dishes is a boring task; spiritual attitude: doing these dishes is serving my husband/family and I do it out of love. From experience, I also know that keeping God close to me throughout the day makes for a much more peaceful and joyful day.
I hope my little tips will provide some revving up in your spiritual life. Though the examples I've used come from my own experience as a Christian, I believe you'll find the suggestions useful no matter your faith/beliefs.
Till next time:

Hi there!
This is my first Spiritual letter. It was a great start to my day. God bless!
Lou-Here By His Grace
Great. I hope you continue enjoying the newsletters.
Your article on confession is so very true. How many times do we weigh ourselves down with the burden of a "secret" that the other may regard as totally trivial? The freedom that we give ourselves by confessing to that error we made, that glass that we broke, that item that we loss makes one realize how natural it appears for us to live in constant fear and guilt, rather in the light of love and forgiveness.
Thanks for sharing with us.

Thank you.
Another stellar issue Puditat, and one that hits home with me... of course, I won't tell you why. Good job!

Thanks for the feedback! It reminded me of something else that I didn't cover in my editorial -- we need to consider who needs to hear our confession. Confessing to just anyone may not bring the desired closure, and certainly can not lead to forgiveness from the person we believe we've offended. There is wisdom in confessing, and confessing to the proper audience.
