Getting Involved On the Site

I receive many emails from both old and new members asking how they can become involved on the site. It's a massive place and can be overwhelming for some, especially those who are on the shy side about sharing their writing and/or giving reviews. One piece of advice I always give is to enter contests. Not only can you showcase your writing, but you have a ready-made audience in the judges and other entrants! Entering contests is one way to lure people into your portfolio and if you respond to their review in kind, it might lead to further reviews and interaction.

If you're not quite ready to enter a contest, why not try out one of the site activities? Most of those aren't judged, rather they encourage interaction among members based on a given topic. Some examples are listed below, but others can be found on "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window., which is linked on the left side of the page in Site Navigation, under the Item Jumps section. Activities can be a low pressure way of meeting other members with similar interests.

Yet another way to use contests to increase your involvement around the site is to review the entries in a contest that interests you. Oftentimes I don't meet the deadline for a contest entry, but I enjoyed the prompt so I'm sure to enjoy many of the stories or poems submitted. Reviewing is a great way to give back to the community and meet other members.

Finally, if you've tried all of the above and still don't feel that you're involved enough, increase your involvement by starting your own contest!

Until Next Time,
Diane Author Icon
