Letter from the editor

After being ill for over eight weeks I have found it difficult to think in even the slimmest of romantically inclined ways in what seems a very long time. Love had gone out the window, the window was shut up tight and the duvet covers blanked everything else out.

It was at a dinner party with friends and family over the New Year holidays that one of our friends said they had found a great guy and was seeing him again that evening, and that would make it the third date. I suddenly became interested in her conversation and asked how they met.

“Well it’s a funny thing” she said.
“Oh?” I replied.
“I met him in the January Sales”

It was at this point that the whole room went quiet and everyone stared at our beloved friend. She giggled nervously, cleared her throat and began to explain that she had decided to go to town, it had been a quiet Christmas for her and she needed a little retail therapy. She had walked into a shop selling gadgets and had accidentally knocked over a stand, a man helped her set the items back and correct the fallen stand, they got talking, went for a coffee and agreed on a date the next evening.

Our party gave an audible sigh and the conversation around the table got cosier I think we all felt a little warmer for the story.

That conversation got me thinking about the film Scroodged, it had been on over Christmas and is one of my favourite holidays film. There is a wonderful scene where the main character Frank Cross played by Bill Murray, bumps into the lovely Claire Phillips played by Karen Allen. The chemistry between them is instantly evadible and love blossoms. I wondered how many other love stories there could be from holiday shopping.

I have talked before about meeting a new love in unusual places, and this, although a common act, a common place, is not the usual setting for love and romance. But it does give an excellent platform for some original ideas. If you imagine the various types of shops available in the high street, then there must be dozens of new angles to work with to create a rich romance filled piece of work.

This has given me a new idea for a contest which will run the course of January, I hope you all join in, get your creative pens at work and write that love/romance piece of writing.
