Every day is an adventure, filled with action and conflict! But when our own action and adventure become too mundane, too ordinary, we turn to action/adventure writers for help. I'm your guest editor for the week, and your mission, if you choose to accept it: put me on the edge of my seat! |

The jungle is thick and brutal, sending sharp claws and snaky vines to tear and tug at me. With my face set in grim determination, I swing my machete left and right, up and down, disturbing flying things best not examined too closely. One lands on my free hand, staring at me with tremendous, multifaceted eyes, and I hurry to shake it off, bringing my other hand around with the blade shaving the hairs from my fingers. I press on, my goal so close I can taste it - or is that the ichor of some other jungle insect?
With a final swipe I break through to the clearing. The clock is ticking. I dive for the pedestal and enter the prearranged codes, somehow submitting the Action/Adventure newsletter on time.
Okay, I didn't have a literal jungle to hack through to get this done, but sometimes it sure felt that way. Just as your average action/adventure hero (which I hope yours are NOT) has to face the trials and tribulations of bad guys, traps, betrayers and his own character flaws, sometimes we all have to overcome a few obstacles to reach our goals - though perhaps on a lesser scale.
Obstacle #1: Time! Racing against the clock is a daily activity for some of us, including authors (and newsletter editors) with deadlines to meet. We may not save the world by doing so, but it can sure feel good!
Obstacle #2: Enemies! Okay, maybe you don't have enemies per se, but surely you have people who make other demands on your time, making it more difficult to overcome Obstacle #1.
Obstacle #3: The Unexpected! You're in the middle of a quest when you lose communication with your home base. Well, more likely, you're in the middle of uploading a story when the Internet goes down, but it can be just as frustrating.
Obstacle #4: You! Maybe you're just lazy, or maybe you'd rather be doing something - anything - else. So when you overcome this obstacle and fulfil your quest objectives anyway, well, reluctant heroes are still heroes!
It's a new year, which will bring new adventures - and new obstacles. Here's hoping you can overcome them, then use them to add spice to your writing! |
As a Guest Editor, I thought I'd do something a bit different and highlight what may be an underused form for Action/Adventure: the poem. While many historical adventure stories were in epic poem form, the genre is now more geared toward novels and screenplays.
So here's a random selection of Action/Adventure poems I found on the site - and I didn't even have to fight fierce predators or rogue agents to dig them up!

As a new editor, I have no feedback to report; as a guest editor, I may not be back here for a while. But please write in, tell me what you thought - and be thinking about ways to put ordinary situations into extraordinary stories! |
