As I write this, the holiday season whirls throughout society, not only in the United States, but in most other countries of the world. Here and there people prepare for Christmas or celebrate Hanukkah or one of the other holidays. The New Year beckons from nearby.

Seasons' Greetings
Writing about Christmas, Hanukkah, or another holiday creates believability in stories. Doing so also often reveals the feelings and beliefs of the author, which adds to the depth of the writing.
Personally, I enjoy writing about Christmas, using it as a part of the setting and/or plot of a short story because I like Christmas. Even if I use the sad parts of life that occurred during the holiday seasons of the past, the joy I feel during this time of the year still peeks through.
Then the idea of the start of a new year, a new beginning, gives a wide array of writing topics. Add a dab of imagination, and a story develops.
I hope you enjoy or enjoyed your holiday and that a story evolves. Below is an example of my Christmas writing.

Being Diane 
I'd love for some more feedback on my short stories but most of all I would like to make a comment about writing for children. Recently I enrolled my dear friend, Paula into the fifth grade. I was taking her shopping for some school things and she paused and said, "Aunt Diane, that just went in one ear and out the other." I just laughed and told her to think on it and later she ask me since I no longer worked at a camp and conference center what I did. I said, "Paula, I write now, books, poems, and just stuff."
Paula said, "That explains those long sentences you always say. I learned that when I read 'Little Women' this summer. I just loved Jo's character."
So I don't think we give these smart children the credit where it is due, my friends!

Children shouldn't be written "down to." I have a great-grandson, whose in the second grade, who reads on a sixth or seventh grade level. However, he still needs help with some words outside his experience. We just need to provide that help when needed.
