About This Newsletter

If we go down the rabbit hole of our unconsciousness and try to unravel the knotty points of our life story we may encounter a bunch of hidden niceties or emotional stowaways. Forgotten details in the windmill of our mind may daintily reveal, where things might have gone wrong. (I wonder what went wrong.)~~Erik Pevernagie

I love the rabbit hole. I spend a lot of time looking at images, Google mapping, etc. I also love to read court transcripts, FBI files, stuff like that. You go through vast, boring stretches, but the voices are always so fascinating and slowly a story begins to emerge. It's very much like playing detective.~~Zachary Lazar

Cassandra always hid when she read, though she never quite knew why. It was as if she couldn't shake the guilty suspicion that she was being lazy, that surrendering herself so completely to something so enjoyable must surely be wrong. But surrender she did. Let herself drop through the rabbit hole and into a tale of magic and mystery.~~Kate Morton

Dr. Seuss provided "ingenious and uniquely witty solutions to the standing problem of the juvenile fantasy writer: how to find, not another Alice, but another rabbit hole.~~Clifton Fadiman

Rabbit holes are my specialty. I live and breathe in them.~~Kara McDowell, One Way or Another

Letter from the editor

The Cheshire Cat had it right, by saying, "If you don’t know where you are going any road can take you there.” I'm rather a fan of them. Rabbit Holes, that is. I usually find the really, really deep ones and only scramble, claw my way out hours later. But I'll have pages and pages of notes on not only what I went diving after but also sidetracts, taken roads not taken, and a roller coaster of a ride through things sparked by jumping in!

I had to do some research for a poem I wrote yesterday. It involved where/what 'La Dolce Vita' was/is. On my journey through the rabbit hole, I went to Paris, followed tracks to a serial murderer, and decided I REALLY needed some creme brulee and a strong cup of coffee. I sat at wrought iron tables for two on cobbled stone byways under hanging pots of bouganvillia and went for a ramble in the cisterns under the streets of Paris. Got sidetracked (yet again) finding good names and then searching for locations of a 'La Dolce Vita' bistro, looking at maps, local pictures and then . . . went off on a tangent that led me to an idea which I eventually used. It was fun! It was also illuminating and I learned several new (to me) things. A most satisfying trek indeed. And yes, all for a poem was my four-hour journey!

At one point, I came across a reference to the Fates (which, due to time constraints, got noted and bookmarked for another day's ramble). A leads to B which leads to XYZ squared! I'm so glad there is no map anywhere of rabbit holes! It would take all the fun and wonder out of it!

I remember doing research --back in the day-- seated at a long oaken table lit by green-lamped library lights and surrounded by a pile of books I'd gathered earlier. I also remember persuading the librarian to leave my piles be until the next morning! These days, although there are just as many (if not more) rabbit holes to fall into, it is easier to trip and not come back for hours, or possibly, days!

The thing is, I stumble across so many possibilities, so many potential things to write about. Stumped for an idea? Type ina word or three into a search bar, take a breath and jump in!
