Letter from the editor

Writing.Com is a community of writers. We have a variety of ways we can communicate with each other but I shall concentration a a big one: our newsfeed.

Actually, it should be a plural noun, as in newsfeeds. Click on Newsfeed in the left-hand column of your screen.

Toward the top of the page you will see a box that says PERSONAL NEWSFEED / VIEW COMMUNITY NEWSFEED / SAVED NEWSFEED NOTES. This is box is important to know about because these are the links to switch between the different versions of newsfeed.

Did you know that if you click on VIEW COMMUNITY NEWSFEED, you can see what everyone at WdC is posting about? Yep, it is the best way to keep track of everyone.

Don't forget, though, that you will have to choose this version of newsfeed every time, because the personal version is the default.

Don't be shy, join in the conversation! You do not have to "know" the person who posted something to respond to it. You don't have to know someone to respond to a question or ask one as well.

We work hard to be courteous and friendly at Writing.Com. There are a couple of things we all need to keep in mind in all our interactions on this site, but especially on newsfeed. First, please remember that members come from all generations, all socioeconomic sectors, all parts of the world, etc. It can also be easy to miss subtleties or tone in a written message, and all of things can lead to misinterpretation of posts and responses to posts.

Why do I bring all this up? Although I am encouraging you to jump in and interact with other members, I also want you to make sure that you take a moment and make sure you understand the interaction to the best of your ability, and respond in the best way you can.

What if you see something that another member posted that seems upsetting or inappropriate? It can happen. It may or may not be a misunderstanding. Responding in kind may only make things worse, so here are some solid ideas to keep in mind.

There are people here to help, always. Nothing on the newsfeed is so urgent that you can't take a moment to reach out and get the back-up you need. Have you noticed that there are different colored "cases" in people's handles, like gray, black, yellow, blue, purple, and red? They are significant. Here is some more detailed information "If You Want To Get Someone's Attention: Tagging and HandlesOpen in new Window..

The help you need will come from any blue or purple cases. We are moderator and senior moderators. The easiest way to find us is to click on MESSENGER on the left-hand side of your screen. Toward the top, you will see the list of the blue and purple cases who are on line at any particular time. Pick one and contact them (sending an email is fine). Let them know what is going on and what your concerns are. Let them look into it and advise you or assist you.

A lot of the issues that come up can be solved between members with or even without a moderator/senior moderator helping. Sometimes having another set of eyes or another perspective can get things ironed out without things blowing up.

I might even add that this advice is not just for new members. Whatever color case you have, seek out a mod or senior mod if you need back-up. Long standing black and yellow cases, I am looking at you but I am not excluding the blues as well! I have been known to seek the advice of my fellow mods and senior mods when I am at a loss. You should, too. We are a community and that is how we function as a community.

Ask & Answer

It has been a hot minute since I have edited a Noticing Newbies Newsletter. Here is the feedback from the last one "Making The Most of ItOpen in new Window.

Thank you for using my suggestion. I really think it will help someone.

There's a couple of things you missed: There's an invalid item in the read a newbie list and there's a sponsor item missing. Not really sure if that takes away from the newsletter, but saying it is for newbies it may show them that it is okay to mess up a little. Great job!
Thank you! Although I agree that it is okay to mess up a little, the invalid item in Read A Newbie was not invalid when I put the link in the newsletter. This happens all the time, unfortunately. The writer decided to delete the item after the newsletter was published. I am not sure what you are referring to as a missing sponsor item. If you mean the Word From Our Sponsor, I have nothing to do with those, they are auto-populated into the newsletter by Writing.Com.

On the subject of content rating, it is not just our thirteen year old members who might be reading. I know of members who let their children/grandchildren read items on here.
Valid point! Even more young reasons to get the content ratings right.
