About This Newsletter

I always thought I ran more like a constipated duck
but this image will have to do.

Hey! I am 🐕GeminiGem🎁 Author Icon, one of the regular editors of the Contests & Activities Newsletter. I have an idea to help you successfully run your contest or activity.

HELP!

If you have a contest or activity in your port that you run on a consistent basis, run occasionally, or haven't run in a while, this newsletter may be of interest to you.

There are a few contests and activities that have run consistently for years. What is their secret? Since I am not the owner of any of them, I can only tell you what I observe.

1. The owner is obviously committed (or possibly should be committed *Laugh*) to the contest/activity.

2. They have worked out all the kinks in the process so that it can run smoothly and consistently.

3. They recruit help. They have back ups for the assigned help and/or are ready to step in themselves if needed.

I can give you two fantastic examples of this:

So, I ask you this: would you like some help? Could you use a hand? Would some support give you any relief? Would you be able to run your contest or activity more often or with more enthusiasm if you could have other members take over tasks like advertising, judging, etc.?

I can reassure you that you would not have to give up control completely. As a matter of fact, your role will be essential to make sure everything runs smoothly in the background. If you still want to be involved in the judging or other more visible aspects, you can do that as well on whatever level works best for you.

Okay, I'll bite. Where do I find these mythical helping creatures? So glad you asked! You could certainly post a request on newsfeed. You could approach particular members directly by email. You could send up smoke signals, send out messenger pigeons, or try a message in a bottle. Those last three suggestions might not be productive, however.

All of these methods have their downsides, some have some upsides. The newsfeed notification might bring in interested parties you wouldn't have thought to ask directly. That could be a good thing or a not-so-good thing. You need to know who to ask if you are emailing requests, and honestly, I have an idea who would be good but not who would be interested or have the time or desire to commit.

Then there's that awkwardness where you want a particular person to help and they say yes because they feel obligated, or you don't want a person to help for one reason or another but you feel obligated to accept because they volunteered...bleh *Pthb*. How to get around this bit of social awkwardness?

Hey, I got you, Boo. I am in the process of creating a most wondrous thing here on Writing.Com. It will be a place where I will recruit people to help and contest owners can request help. We can all get linked up without the social awkwardness. Unless you enjoy the social awkwardness, then I could always try to find a way to reintroduce that into the process.

Now, I haven't got it all organized and put together yet, so the item is set on PRIVATE. I "inherited" this forum (so to speak), and I have just now figured out what to do with it. I will make some announcements on newsfeed once it is ready. Let's work together to make our contests vibrant and sustainable.
