“Only do what your heart tells you to do.” – Princess Diana
Romance: an ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.
It’s not easy being wealthy. How do you know your significant other is falling in love with you or your money and power? A subgenre and romance trope known as a “millionaire” romance is one that really appeals to readers. The promises of escape, a little bit of danger, mystery, and a glittering world has a lot of appeal. Another example would be Cinderella and the Prince falling in love. The 1991 Pretty Woman movie with Richard Gere and Julia Roberts comes to mind. What does it mean to be wealthy and in love? Let’s find out…

More modern “Cinderella” stories typically involve a millionaire or a billionaire in a business environment who falls in love with a woman who is a younger than them, and working at a humbler job. There’s the prince who falls in love with Cinderella, and a well off man who falls in love with the girl from the wrong side of the tracks. One of the most compelling elements in this type of story is that our heroes are not bound by ordinary limits when attempting to woo the love of his life. Here are some things to consider when writing/exploring your wealthy romance.
The Rags to Riches Trope
A humble woman falls for a rich guy and he falls for her. The trope involves our budding couple having to adapt to their new environment which allows for conflict and tension to really test their love. Typically, our guy is a tad older, successful, and drop dead gorgeous, but he may be lacking a compassion or warmth that our “Cinderella” brings out in him, which to his surprise, he discovers he likes about himself.
At the beginning of our story, our rich millionaire may be a bit jaded, or a tad stiff and he discovers our humble Cinderella helps him to lighten up and have some friends, or makes him realize he doesn’t need to be so stiff around people. He likes what our humble heroine brings out in him.
The setting is one that speaks to escapism. Perhaps they meet at a fancy party, or a well known beach? Who doesn’t like it when our hero sweeps our heroine off her feet to places she’d never thought she’d go to?
What makes our wealthy hero appealing? There’s a reason why he’s a little stiff or jaded. Maybe he’s got a tragic backstory? Maybe there’s bad family blood? Or he’s been burned before. Our hero has a tendency not to flaunt his wealth, a quality our heroine appreciates. He may be a brooding man when he’s not around her, but when he is close to her, that smile keeps tipping out.
What makes our humble heroine appealing? She’s innocent, but not clueless. She may be resistant to her wealthy suitor, but she is curious. His wealth may actually be a put off, and when it comes to him, she’s clueless to the appeal and allure she has over him.
Conflicts
Conflicts need to be believable and one of the more common ones is “I’m not good enough.” This is a delicious inner conflict that may linger. Other common conflicts include family drama, (she’s not good enough for him), adjusting to the lifestyle, and a woman from his own economic background. Each conflict has its own unique challenges.
And, ultimately for me, it’s the promise of a happy ending which is why I enjoy this genre very much. The promise of ordinary emotions such as desire, insecurity, jealousy and ultimately trust set against such lavish backdrops as a fancy Italian villa, secluded beaches, and fancy mansions helps intensify the sky high stakes as our couple falls in love.
Question: What’s your favorite Cinderella-like “Rags to Riches” movie?

I had no feedback from my last Romance/Love NL dated 19 FEB 2025, “Wonderful.”
Feedback from my Newsletter Question: Do you like "Rags to Riches" romance stories?
Allan Charles 🐾 Busy Busy
I don’t like stories where the love and romance is defined by one of the character’s economical status being higher than the other’s. I read a story years and years back, I can’t even remember the name or where I read it… a wealthy man fell in love with a woman who lived in poverty. He lived a modest life, no fancy home or cars or anything, and they dated for years and he never revealed how much money he had. He was waiting until she was in love with him for him, not because of his money. And after she fell in love with him, he died. But to her surprise, he left her everything she ever could have dreamed of in his will.
That kind of rags to riches I do like. Where the romance isn’t based on money and status, but rather just a plus side to a real romance, if that makes sense.
