Letter from the editor

Happy New Year. Happy 2025. *faint memory of the song by Zager & Evens comes to mind --In the Year 2525...* No, we aren't there yet, but so much has changed in my lifetime. The 50s and 60s were a long time ago. I see posts and hear people talking. This is the year they are going to lose weight, go on a diet, stop what-evering, write their book, buy a house, finish their novel, or a hundred other things.

I've never been big on resolutions. As a kid, I thought they were 're-solutions.' In other words, coming up with another answer to a problem, another solution. A do-over. I can remember a few years I would absolutely NOT want to do over, regardless of a different outcome. High school years echo...

At 70, I've done almost everything I once wanted. Haven't made it to Ireland or Wales. Yet. Won't be in 2025 either. Might never happen. I'm okay with that. I weigh less than I've weighed in 25 years. I've been to a good chunk of this planet. I am loved. I've lived and I intend to keep on living. For a good while, at any rate. I might actually retire this year. Or not. We'll see.

My hubby and I will probably be sound asleep by midnight. The balls will still fall. New Year's, to me, is a bit like Janus hanging there above a doorway. Another year. Good, bad, or indifferent. It won't be the 'year without a kitchen.' That was 2024. Except for a few minor details, it is complete. Yay! No major plans for '25 except to keep on plodding or dancing or writing along.

What would I wish for '25? For people to be kinder. I would wish for folks to practice kindness on a daily basis. I would wish for positive energy to infuse the planet. I just want people to be nice to each other. A simple wish. I do my part. Wish more folks would. (Especially those who don't. Ever.) But, life will go on regardless.

I wish you all your best year thus far. In whatever manner, way or silliness it may happen. I wish for those who are sad or lonely, to find happiness and a new friend. I wish a sense of wellness. nd I wish for people to find joy in the simple day-to-day existence we all share.

Ask & Answer

Madelyn Silver & Gold Stone Author IconMail Icon writes: Thank you for the topic of this NL - Gratitude-remembering the little things. Most of the time, I am focused on trying not to include too much detail in my writing. This made me stop and think about the books I love the most and what I really remember about the characters. It's not just the 'big' stuff they accomplish. A lot of times, it's those little interactions that build the image of that character that sticks with a reader.

YES!

Elisa: Snowman Stik Author IconMail Icon says: "Sometimes, writers get so involved in the 'big' picture of their story, they forget (?) or neglect (?) to include the simple moments, the little things that fuel us as people."

That is true, but when I write I prefer those moments to not be rooted in gratitude. I prefer them to be rooted in challenge, discovery, or candor. I feel like gratitude tends to come off as fake or performative.

More, it is the moments in and of themselves that sometimes get lost in the shuffle. The silly ones, the poignant ones, the proud ones, or the regretful ones. The moments that bring a character to life.

Dawn Embers Author IconMail Icon comments: This was a very nice newsletter. With everything I've been going through health wise, I am very thankful to have the family support and online support that I've received. My mom has been doing so much to help me, it's impossible to show how much gratitude that I have for that. Thanks for the topic and the reminder.

:)

Leger~ Author IconMail Icon adds: Love this newsletter, and yes the small things DO matter. It makes us connect with the characters and frankly, slow down and enjoy those moments. Many people don't have that pleasure in life.
Leger~

Absolutely!
