“Christmas waves a magic wand over this world, and behold, everything is softer and more beautiful.” – Norman Vincent Peale
“For us a child is born, to us a son is given, and he will be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.” – Isaiah 9:6
Romance: an ardent emotional attachment between two people. A love affair.
As you read this, today is Christmas and I would like to wish to you a merry Christmas. May your day be merry and light and may all your Christmas’s be bright.
For me, Christmas is one of the most romantic times of the year. Christmas is a season of hope. It’s uplifting. Christmas lights and good cheer put us in a happy mood. What is the appeal of Christmas romance? Is it more than just a message of hope and good cheer? Is it the wholesome nature of the season? What makes romance resonate with us a little longer and a little deeper in December?
There’s a genre of romance known as Inspirational which is a Christian based romance. Let’s explore what makes Inspirational romance a touch more heartwarming this time of year.

Inspirational romance tends to focus on spiritual themes, values, faith, morals, and ethics. It seems like a lot, but actually there’s a lot of room for stories. Typically, they are Christian based with familiar themes that include: faith, forgiveness, and redemption. Typically, these stories are very uplifting, and they tend to share that trait with the Christmas stories we see during this time of year.
Some of the elements of inspirational romance include clean language, sweet romance, faith-based themes, spiritual themes, redemption, and healing.
Faith based themes can encompass a lot of topics but the ones that resonate the most with readers include forgiveness and redemption. The ending of those stories can be very hopeful.
Inspirational romance does need to focus on a specific faith or its practices, though weaving faith-based traditions into your romance (like a candle lighting ceremony) can provide opportunities for the characters to explore that budding romance.
Another aspect of inspirational romance also includes spirituality. People can be spiritual but not necessarily invested in a faith-based religion. Spirituality can include a respect for nature, for human life, and a God based relationship without an organized religion.
Another element of an Inspirational romance is that it is a sweet romance. While there is usually hand holding, cuddling, and maybe even a chaste kiss, the descriptions don’t usually go any further than that. Also, the characters typically use clean language. Foul language is generally not used in an inspirational romance.
Inspirational romance generally resonates with readers who seek uplifting stories that resonate with the heart. They’re the perfect type of stories for this type of year when the Christmas season brings out the best in us.
