Letter from the editor

Halloween is approaching quickly and I have no doubt that many contest and activity hosts have already started planning and so has the Writing.Com staff. Site colors change, ghosties appear out of nowhere, scroll games increase, and contest and activities gear up for the ghoulish holiday. October is a fun and exciting month around Writing.Com.

Halloween presents some unique opportunities as far as Contest and Activities. Seasonal madlibs and crosswords are entertainment guarantees, as is word searches, crosswords, campfires and interactives. There are several collections of Halloween C-Notes that are very creative and festive. In & Outs, surveys, polls, and quizzes offer interesting opportunities, as does blogs/journals. Statics could be a number of things, from novels, poems, short stories, etc. The ideas are endless.

I love Halloween around the site with all the interaction, spooky short stories to read and a wide variety of contests to enter. Inspiration seems to be everywhere and some unique ideas emerge around the site. With October 1st is just a few days away keep your eyes open for those plugs on "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. if you are looking for a contest or activity. Hosts don't forget to get the word out about your item(s) and be sure to plug!

For those of you who want to host a contest and/or activity for the season but haven't been inspired yet, let me throw out some ideas and see if any of them get those gears turning in your head. *Wink*

*Bullet* Poetry and short story contests are always a hit. Be creative and offer some unusual prompts for the season. Research and develop a prompt from an interesting or strange fact.

*Bullet* How about a recipe contest? Contestants could submit their most delicious and decorative recipes for Halloween!

*Bullet* Images are definitely fun and offer so many ideas for a contest or activity. C-notes and sigs, or how about photography? A pumpkin carving contest sounds like a lot of fun. Contestants could show off their creativity by submitting photographs of their delightful or spooky Jack o’ lanterns. Or contestants could submit photographs of their Halloween costumes. Pay attention scrapbookers, because page layouts could be an intriguing contest, too!

*Bullet* I've seen a few Journals/blogs contests. How interesting would it be for contestants to assume an identity of some character, fictitious monster, or object and create a journal from that point of view?

*Bullet* Quizzes and polls offer a wonderful and entertaining activity or contest. Halloween, novel or movie trivia are some options.

*Bullet* Scavenger Hunt around the site would be a neat idea. Using riddles would be challenging and in the spirit of the season could be a blast!

*Bullet* Creating a group, campfire or interactive for a Halloween game is an idea. It would be very entertaining to incorporate the game Clue or something to that effect.

Here's an activity that can be played within a group. Witches Old Maid. Create a scary or goofy image along with an email to be emailed among members of your group. The member who has the forwarded email in their inbox at midnight on Halloween is the Witch! You could create a forum for group members to post so you could track the email. Be sure to keep the game within your group because other site members may not want to participate and may consider the email spam.

*Bullet* In & Outs are awesome! Use In & Outs to create a story so many words or lines at a time, or submit your best pranks. Knock knock jokes are hilarious and would be fun in an I&O. Or how about an I&O about the worst victims in movies? You know, the ones that you watch on the screen that are going to go down to the basement or open that door when we know they shouldn't and they should too! And when they do, they just stand there and scream instead of RUNNING! *Laugh*

*Bullet* And what about all those ghosties that mysteriously appear in scroll and in instant messages? Can you name them all? Where was the last sighting?

*Bullet* How about a campfire contest! Imagine sitting around a campfire one dark Halloween night telling each other ghost stories! *Smile* Contestants could create a campfire and work in teams to write the scariest campfire story.

Those are just a few ideas that popped in my head. If you think these suggestions are corny, thankfully the site has many creative members who's ideas are far better than anything I could possibly come up. *Smile*

If you find yourself not wanting to host or participate in a contest or activity this year, then try to get in the spirit of Halloween by doing a little trick or treating around the site, especially the treating! Visit newbies, strangers, friends, or some of those contest and activities, and check out the entries. Treat members with an encouraging and helpful review!

Until next time...

Great Advice! And one that I completely agree with. If you can't follow through with the rules that you, the host set, then you shouldn't be running a contest, plain and simple.

Love your newletters by the way! Keep up the great work! *Smile*

Great edition! I use favorites as a way to check on my contest submissions, but items just disappear from there, too. When I asked tech support about it, they said that if someone deletes an item, it will disappear from favorites. So in the end, if you haven't kept a record of the host of a contest, you cannot track them down if they don't fulfill their commitment.
