I had a different topic lined up for this week’s Noticing Newbies newsletter. But, I’ve heard talk around the site about how to acquire gift points (GPs). The discussions I’ve heard recently, however, have had a negative connotation to them.
First, permit me to be blunt. It is NEVER okay to beg for or entice other members into giving you GPs. While there are groups and individual members who often gift memberships to persons they feel are deserving, it’s not a foregone conclusion that every member will receive such a gift. And it’s up to them to decide—not the potential recipient. The WDC community at large is a generous and giving one. Don’t abuse their generosity; that benefits no one.
It’s alright for new members (and older ones too) to ask how one might earn GPs for use on the site. After all, you’ve just joined—no one expects you to know all the facets of WDC.
Some background. Gift points are Writing.Com’s proprietary monetary system. You can acquire and spend GPs only on WDC. Check out "Gift Points" for more information about GPs. There are numerous ways to both acquire GPs and spend them. Their use supports both the site and the membership.
This week I’ll talk about acquiring gift points.
- You can purchase GPs from the "The Writing.Com Shop" . Several times during the year, the site offers a bonus of GPs when purchasing them. One special time is now during the 2024 Birthday festivities.
- All registered members receive GPs each day they visit WDC. The amount of GPs a member receives is based on their membership status with higher level memberships (Preferred Author, Moderator, etc.) receiving more GPs daily. This daily visit receives GPs simply for being logged—you do not have to interact with anyone that day.
- You can earn GPs by doing qualified reviews. A qualified review is a meaningful review of 250 characters or more.
The system automatically pays GPs for reviews under the Review Mixer ("The Review Mixer" ), Daily Rewards ("Daily Review Rewards" ) and the Read & Review ("Finding Items To Read" ).
Members can automatically pay for reviews by setting up Auto-Rewards ("Auto-Rewards" ) or by giving them on the Public Review system ("Public Review Rewards" ).
- Enter Official Writing.Com Contests: Each month the site offers two contests with a chance to win substantial GP prizes. One note: you must have a paid membership to be eligible for these prizes.
- Enter Member-run Contests: Members host a number of daily, weekly, monthly or longer contests that often include GP prizes. Check out "Writing Contests @ Writing.Com" for a listing of these contests. A couple of notes. This listing is not all-inclusive, and some contests may be on hiatus at times during the year. Contact the member host for a current status. Also, bookmark any contest that interests you—you can then follow it in your Favorites list.
- Members themselves may give other members GPs just for being helpful.
I believe the use of gift points are a unique facet of Writing.Com. They offer members both a way to receive from and give back to the site and the members.
That's a lot of options to obtain GPs.
Any currency is only as good as the public's faith in it. I think it's safe to say the WDC gift point system is strong. Gift points are a mainstay of the members and the system is one indicator of WDC's future success. The use of GPs displays the overwhelming generosity of the members.
Go earn 'em and spend 'em.

That's how I feel whenever I'm away from home.
