About This Newsletter

Quote for the week:

"A cold wind blows, and I follow.
No time to rest my weary bones.
I hear her voice, and my heart grows hollow.
Best not walk these woods alone.

Best keep to the roads and out of the shadows.
Best get on home.
Best to leave them ghosts alone."

Letter from the editor

Eldritch is an old English or Scottish word that means something supernatural that is weird or unearthly. Eldritch horror is a subgenre that emphasizes fear of the unknown. Eldritch horror has a strong component of fantasy and occasionally science fiction.

Villains and monsters in eldritch horror are often from other worlds or dimensions. Examples of other dimensions include the Upside Down in "Stranger Things" or the realm of the fae. Other eldritch creatures might come from a part of our world not usually inhabited by humans, such as deep in the earth or under the sea.

Eldritch activities include magic, divination, and necromancy, so many characters are either witches or others that can do magic or have supernatural abilities.

Some of the most well known eldritch fiction includes the work of HP Lovecraft, such as the short story, "The Call of Cthulhu." Cthulhu is said to be an ancient creature that appears to be a combination of octopus, dragon, and human features. Cthulhu and other Lovecraftian creatures are said to be Great Old Ones, or deities that ruled the earth long before humans existed.

Many other authors have used the Lovecraftian universe as settings for their own stories. Examples include Ramsey Campbell and Robert Bloch. Lovecraft's Universe and other eldritch horror universes are also popular settings for role playing games.

The podcast, "Malevolent" by Harlan Guthrie is an audio drama that follows a private investigator named Arthur Lester through mysterious events that feature the universe and monsters created by Lovecraft.

Another audio drama podcast, "Old Gods of Appalachia" by Steve Shell and Cam Collins is an eldritch horror podcast that is set in an alternate universe version of the Appalachian Mountains. These stories feature monsters, creatures, and characters based on folk tales of the Appalachians or created by the authors. An example is a gigantic black deer with amber antlers and glowing red eyes.

Something to try: Write a horror story including eldritch creatures or settings.
