Judging Style

If you judge or host a contest, how do you judge your entries? I'm curious!

I recently judged a short story contest, and this is my method:

*Bullet* I use a spreadsheet. I have a column for the item's title, a column for notes (I also keep notes in the site's Review Tool while reading), a column for the overall rating, and a column for the current ranking (which I update as I add each entry that I've read). Depending on the contest, I might have columns so I can score categories, like theme, style, grammar, creativity, etc. That comes in handy when I have to decide between entries. (I purposely leave usernames out of my spreadsheets, so I don't let a known username or color case influence my reading.)

*Bullet* My mind works best mid-morning, so that's when I chose to read and "grade" the entries for the most part. I try not to read too many at once so I don't get fatigued.

*Bullet* I set a deadline. My mind works best with a clear deadline so I know when I want to finish and announce the winners, so I choose a deadline for myself. I usually try to finish early, too, but that's just me. *Wink*

*Bullet* Take a break. If I'm really uncertain about ranking (it can get tough sometimes!), I'll take a break. I've found that with a lot of mental struggles, taking a break can help me get a new perspective and make a decision. That's one of the reasons my judging deadline is often a day or two before the deadline to announce my results.

How do you judge your contest entries? Let me know below!

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*
