About This Newsletter

My banner for the Action/Adventure Newsletter.

“The big question is whether you are going to be able to say a hearty yes to your Adventure.” -- Joseph Campbell

Action: The state of doing; organized activity to accomplish an objective.

Adventure: An undertaking of a hazardous nature; an unusual or exciting experience.

A little adventure in our life keeps us on top of our game. Every action/adventure story has 8 Obligatory moments – scenes that NEED to be in the telling of the tale because without them, there’s no pay off as the story progresses. Let’s find out what they are.

I’m StephBee Author IconMail Icon and I’m your Action/Adventure Guest Editor this week.

Action/Adventures stories need certain moments to unfold to really make it an action/adventure. Without these types of moments, we can’t really say it fits the genre. These moments are usually events, or revelations, or decisions that have a BIG pay off and raise the expectation of the story telling.

#1 – An Inciting attack or a threat by the villain. The reader gets to know who the villain is and what are the stakes to the hero. This is a great way to start your story, with an inciting event.

#2 – A Reluctant Hero – our hero sidesteps responsibility to take action. They’re just trying to figure what happen. They’re reluctant. There’s a need to find out more.

#3 – The Hero is forced to leave their world – because of the inciting event, their world isn’t the same and it’s time to find out why.

#4 – The hero discovers and comes to understand the Villain and why he’s the Villain’s object of desire. This is important because the hero can’t fight against what he doesn’t know or understand. He’s got to understand the problem.

#5 – The Hero’s initial strategy against the Villain fails. You can’t make it easy for the Hero. He’s got to earn this.

#6 – The Hero realizes he has to change his approach to preserve life. This is usually the “all is lost moment.” This is where inspiration and outside the box thinking comes in.

#7 – The Hero is at the mercy of the Villain. This the part of the story where the Hero’s “gift” is expressed. This is what makes him the Hero. Think Indiana Jones and Raiders of the Lost Ark. When Indy tells Marion to close her eyes, at the end so they don’t see the wind, it’s his cunning that’s won the day.

#8 – The Hero’s sacrifice is rewarded. Maybe he’s found a new love. A new place to live. Whatever he or she has been through, however rough it was, the reward is just as sweet.

Without these moments to define the Hero and push him to further his growth, without these moments or revelations to test him, an action/adventure story isn’t quite the same. It’s the action/adventure that tests him or her as a character and furthers their growth. And for the reader, it's a great reward to see a character grow.
