“I love flowers, even on normal days, so they are a must have on Valentine’s. Ditto for Chocolate.” – Rohit Saraf
“Spread love everywhere you go. Let no one come to you without leaving happier.” – Mother Theresa

When it comes to love and romance, February dares you to challenge your creativity by hosting National Creative Romance month. Get a little flirty during the 3rd week of the month and embrace International Flirting Week.
I might have missed Valentines’ Day with this newsletter, but the day dominates the month. Cards, Chocolates, and Flowers are only a couple of ways to show our significant others we care for them. How we express and receive love is deeper than just receiving gifts like chocolate and flowers. There’s a whole language dedicated to showing our partners the love and appreciation we feel for them in our hearts. Simply put, the Five Love Languages, first published in 1992 and written by Gary Chapman is a book that discusses how to express and receive love in our relationships.

Gary Chapman, the author of the “The Five Love Languages” book was a marriage counselor and after years of counseling couples, he noticed one of the biggest obstacles to a solid relationship was that the couple had a tendency to misunderstand the others’ needs simply because everyone is different and unique and has different expectations.
From this realization, he observed that if couples could express their feelings in a way that would resonate with the other person, this would build their connection and lead to a stronger relationship.
Chapman noted 5 ways in which people express and receive love and called this “The 5 Love Languages.” They are: Words of Affirmation, Acts of Service, Receiving Gifts, Quality Time, and Physical Touch.
Words of Affirmation involve using praise and voicing your appreciation. Compliments, words of encouragement, and uplifting notes sing to the receiver’s heart.
Acts of Service include doing things for your partner to make them feel appreciated such as folding clothes, or doing the dishes. Giving your loved one a helping hand really means a lot to them and shows them you love them.
Receiving gifts doesn’t mean give your partner a high-end expensive gift every time you give them a gift. Instead, it involves a certain amount of thoughtfulness in picking out a gift that counts. A little gift can go a long way in the receiver’s heart.
Quality Time means spending time with your partner and giving them your undivided attention. Put down your cell phone, make eye contact, and actively listen. Quality over quantity counts here.
Physical touch involves expressions such as holding hands, hugs, or even cuddling. Touching signals a desire to be close which warms your loved one’s heart.
In the book, you can take a questionnaire to find out what your primary love language is. A commitment takes hard work, gives and takes, with highs and lows that will test a couple’s fortitude. The 5 Love Languages is a great self-help tool that will strengthen your commitment.
Next time you read a romance notice the love languages used.
Enjoy your busy February!
