That New Year Smell

Whether you follow the optimistic idea that the new year equals a new you and everything that you wanted to change about yourself will now work out. Or whether you follow the pessimistic idea that things can and will go wrong if you attempt them, the new year is bound to make you feel some things.
Even those who say that they are too jaded or sarcastic to deal with the new year will usually be among the first to tell you that they don't care about it. Why then are they talking about it?

Using the optimistic way to approach the new year has many benefits. First of all, even if you can't sustain the momentum for twelve months, or four seasons, or 52 weeks, any progress you make early on is progress made. So, believe in your ability to change the things about yourself that you want to change. First and foremost, if you're not writing enough, you should get started right now.

One year recent year, I wrote all of January and ended up winning and earning a boatload of merit badges. To be honest, I was a little burned out after that pace, but I did it! Nobody can take that away from me. Whether you're the type to go hard from the word go and not let yourself take any breaks until you inevitably fizzle out, or if you are the skilled marathon runner who can go the whole distance of a year and have a lot of creative output: Do it. Get started. There is no day like today to trust in your own ability to do anything and everything you want to do.

To the pessimists among you. Yes, when your good intentions are thrown out after a few days, you will be able to rejoice and say "I told you so." You have built in your own success. The success to be right. I think that is a great way to look at things. Personally, I take it hard when I find myself unable to write as much as I want. I wish I could be snarky to myself and find a reason to laugh it off.

In the meantime, I'm going to try to write one finished piece per week in 2024. Come and ask me at the end of December if I did it.

Tell me how you plan to fine-tune your writing in this brand new year.

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "Set Yourself Up For SuccessOpen in new Window. that asked What are your creative plans for 2024?

W.P. Gerace Author Icon wrote: Greetings Annette,
I do hope you are doing well today. My plan is to get more involved in my writing and here at Writing.Com in 2024. I have been sort of on a hiatus from my work and I am trying to get back into it now. I also have to work a part time job which is fine since it's from home but my goal is to participate in Writers Cramp, do a few reviews a week and working on a Short Story and Write 500 Words a day on my horror novel outline. Thanks so much a fantastic newsletter as always my friend. :) :)
Yours Truly,
Bill G.
