Letter from the editor

I've always wanted to live in a house with secret rooms or passageways. It would be both fun and a little bit scary at the same time.

I recently stayed in a hotel that used to be an old monastery and was said to have several secret rooms and passages. I thought of going to look for one, but was afraid I would get lost!

Hidden places are a great addition to mystery stories. They can be a perfect place to hide valuable items or anything your characters don't want someone else to find.

The secret places in your story might be a classic bookshelf that turns around at the touch of a hidden button. Or a more modern version might require an electronic code to open.

A secret passageway might lead your characters outside or to a completely different building. Maybe a body or other evidence of a crime might be hidden there. In a children's mystery, it just might be a fun place to play and hide from adults or bullies.

Maybe the secret place in your story is very small, just big enough to hide a book, jewelry box, or map. This type might be a secret drawer located in a desk or other piece of furniture.

Since secret rooms and other hidden places have been used a lot in mysteries, try to use yours in an unusual way.

Something to try: Write a mystery story that involves a secret room or passageway>
