Letter from the editor

Are you preparing for winter? Probably not if you live in the Southern Hemisphere! In that case, you’ll be looking forward to the warmer weather. Over here, however, it looks like we’re going to have a cold one.

My husband and I live on the side of a hill. Beautiful views, but not always practical to get up and down in the winter. We’ve been preparing by getting some wood in early, and we’re slowly but surely stocking our pantry. Our preparation for winter does not just involve food and heat; we’re also planning some creative projects. My husband has his music and his woodcrafting projects. I have a variety of characters and storylines dancing around my head that are increasingly impatient to get out.

There’s an old, unfinished NaNo novel that I still feel shows promise. There’s also a long story that’s been on my mind since last year. I’m doing a catch-up on "The Contest ChallengeOpen in new Window. [13+] – if you are not yet participating in this challenge, I highly recommend it. You only have to enter one of the listed contests each month. Participation for 12 months will earn you rewards. You’ll discover many fun contests and events and get to play around with a wide variety of prompts. It’s helped me break through a writer’s block – it may spark your creativity as well.

Do you ever use pen and paper for your poems or stories? I love to curl up with a warm blanket around me, jotting down ideas before typing them up. There’s something cosy and comforting about it. Speaking of writing by hand, if you are a registered author or above, have been a member of this site for a minimum of six months, and enjoy sending and receiving snail mail, "The Snail Mail GroupOpen in new Window. [E] is a good group to join. I currently have on my mantelpiece cards from the US, Dubai and the Netherlands. They make me smile every time I look at them. Soon, I’ll start looking for Christmas cards to send out and hopefully spread some smiles around the world myself.

The winter can feel dark and miserable, but it has a lot to offer us. It can be a time of reflection. Inspire plans for the future. I don’t necessarily mean New Year’s resolutions, though they can be helpful. It can simply be a time to think ahead and establish some goals for both the shorter and the longer term.

For example, last winter I planned on getting back into writing, and here I am! I planned to read more, and I joined "Rach's Reading ClubOpen in new Window. [E]. I planned on hosting my activities once more. You can check what’s open each month over at "Kit's Contest and Awards GroupOpen in new Window. [E]. Winter doesn’t, then, need to be boring. It can be a time of productivity, and creativity and (perhaps above all) community.

Writing.Com has a wonderfully encouraging community. A good place to meet people is on the community newsfeed. You can also meet like-minded members by joining groups and participating in contests and activities. That’s how I have met many of my Writing.Com friends!

Have fun, then, preparing for winter. Or summer, as the case may be. Just beware the zombies. They’re out there, you know: "ZombieRun! Open in new Window. [13+]!
