Why does the devil play a hand in all things evil but God only watches us from above?
This has nothing to do with questioning ones beliefs or lack thereof. Whether you believe or not, good and evil have always been part of our lives. To write about evil creatures, the gory stuff, the unexplained, which scares people, at least a part of you has to believe in it. In something. And in the end all evil stems from the devil. Or does it? Let's examine.
The devil who is known to some as Lucifer or Satan, or even Prince of Darkness, which are just a few known names, is the epitome of all things bad. Yet, if my history (or myth or folklore if you want to call it) or even my memory serves me right, he used to be an angel fallen from grace. His crime was that of loving people and humanity, our personal struggles or more than just good and evil. Our emotions, love as well as hate, is what made him fall in love with us. A little farfetched to be creator of all evil, but that's not here nor there.
How many evil Gods are there? Are they above everything else or are they simply minions of the devil? Loki, Cronus, Baba Yaga or the Boogeyman - one which I'm very familiar with because my parents/family used to tell me about and scare me with - Beelzebub, Lilith, and so many more. Not to forget their minions and other creatures of evil decent.
At the same time there are just as many good entities but the fascination with them is not necessarily nonexistent, bur rather limited. We almost take good for granted while we are very curious about evil. It doesn't make us bad people. It's our imagination with the dark side and the need to explain it, share it, understand it. When good things happen in our lives, we are thankful, grateful, but we aren't surprised. It is as if we expect it. Evil or bad things, we tend to look for an explanation. Why did it happen to us? What did we do to bring bad luck upon us?
You may be a big believer or a complete non-believer. Some will say things just happen and don't question it further, but most will. Most people look at their life and question everything. On many occasions we have no choice, we don't have control over the things that happen to us. Others are plagued with lesser evil of the unknown kind, a mystery to us that we tend to dismiss if we haven't experienced it, but that doesn't mean that it doesn't exist.
Which means that when it comes to writing we have a connection to the people or entities we write about. Be they real or make believe. It is part of us, hidden somewhere in the deepest corners of our soul. We might not dissect the thought or where such thoughts come from but they are there. And for any writer to be a good writer, we have to face our hidden demons even if it is with the written word.
'til next time!
