Letter from the editor

Birthday!

In mere days, our community is going to be celebrating our 23rd birthday. Can you believe it? Back when I joined in 2004, I couldn't imagine still being part of this community after so many years. But the bug was caught and I'm still here, hanging out like a bat in the belfry. *Laugh*

I can safely say I have learned so much about our craft and made many friends along the way. Some of them I had the privilege of meeting in person at WDC Conventions. All of this is certainly something to celebrate.

Not only are we going to get lots of cool gifts and prizes throughout the birthday week, but hopefully you will join in the fun and meet new friends, connect with some really great contest hosts and win some prizes. Be sure to check in EVERY DAY, the fun happens each day and you get extra points just for logging in. There will be a link to Birthday Central in the upper left of the site pages, click it and check out everything BIRTHDAY and more.

It's the perfect time to stretch your wings and write something outside your comfort zone. There are lots of opportunities even when birthday week is over. Give it a try!

Always, Write On!

Ask & Answer

This month's question: Have you written something for a contest that ended up being very special? Send in your answer below! *Down* Editors love feedback!

Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (August 2, 2023)Open in new Window. question: Do you use bid-click to promote your items? Do you feel it helps?

Find bid-click info in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. - "BidClick System: Sponsored Items, Links & GenresOpen in new Window.

NaNoNette Author Icon: I have never used bid-click to promote my items, so I can't tell if it makes a difference. Every month, I am on the lookout to find contests or activities to feature in "The Simple Fundraiser Open in new Window. to help them out with gift points. I wish more people would use "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. to advertise what they offer. Too many rely on the newsfeed too much and things travel off the page and then they are gone.

bryanmchunter: I don't even know what bid-click is.

TheBusmanPoet Author Icon: Never heard of it either.

Nobody’s Home Author Icon: I'd like to hear from someone who does use it. I read about bid-click when I joined WdC and all of the site info popped into my email box. If you don't know what it is, I'll bet you can learn about it in this newsletter, since that's where this question is coming from. It's also likely covered in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window. .

Mouse says gobble gobble Author Icon: It uses up gps too fast in my opinion. at least that has been the case when I used it in the past....

Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 Author Icon: I use it to promote a contest

I don't think anyone would find either one w/o the click-bid system.

N.A Miller Author Icon: nope willing to learn though...

Vincent Woolridge Author Icon: I don't know what bid-click is or what items are being promoted.

Dave Ryan Author Icon: I did for my memoir (until the powers-that-be changed the intro rating from E to non-E for my use of a banned word in the title, meaning it was no longer eligible *Cry*). I can't say I noticed it making much of a difference to the number of views it received. As a reader, it very rarely occurs to me to check out the sponsored lists and so, based on that admittedly limited experience, I don't really think it's worth it.

Happy to write Author Icon: I don't know what that is please explain.

NaNotatoGo! Author Icon: Fair to say a lot of us, including me, don’t know about bid-click. Can we please get some enlightenment?

elephantsealer Author Icon: What are "bid-clicks", anyway????????

Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 Author Icon: Bid-clicks are a way to promote your items on Writing.COM. You spend GPS to have your item rotate through various places on the site like the "sponsored items" in the lower right-corner.

Click My Account/My BidClick Bids in the left navigation menu to visit your BidClick page and promote your items within the community. Once there, you set the amount you're willing to pay in GPS everytime someone clicks on your page in the relevant advertising area--contests, sponsored area, etc. How frequently your item appears in the rotation is determined by the amount you pay per click.

There's more information in Writing.Com 101--see the top menu for a link to that resource. Almost all your questions about the site can be answered there.
