About This Newsletter

"I decided that it was not wisdom that enabled poets to write their poetry, but a kind of instinct or inspiration, such as you find in seers and prophets who deliver all their sublime messages without knowing in the least what they mean."

Socrates

"Poetry is a deal of joy and pain and wonder, with a dash of the dictionary."

Khalil Gibran

Reinvent to Reinvigorate

I’m so happy to be back! I‘ve been busy. I earned my masters in just under a year—while working full-time. Whew! I can’t remember a time when I pushed so hard and was so tired. Well, maybe when I was a new mom.

While I was open to it, I certainly didn’t expect to get a promotion immediately following it, but it’s been an amazing ride! I wasn’t unhappy in my old role, but my new role allows me to take my passion for helping students to the next level and it has reinvigorated my joy in my job.

This leads me to my poetry challenge for you! Whether or not you feel you need to reinvigorate your joy in writing poetry, I want you to try it. Play with rhythm, rhyme, form, or reinvent the form I share below. If you’re feeling really inspired, invent your own unique poetry form!

If you take me up on the challenge, please share!

Treinte-sei

This is a newer form that was invented in the 1900s by poet John Ciardi.

MUST HAVES

--Line count: 36

--Number of stanzas: 6 (with 6 lines in each)

--Stanza 2 starts with line 2 of the first stanza, stanza 3 starts with line 3 of the first stanza, stanza 4 starts with line 4 of the first stanza, stanza 5 starts with line 5 of the first stanza, and stanza 6 starts with line 6 of the first stanza.

--Rhyme: ABABCC (Each stanza sticks to the rhyme scheme, but stanzas 2-6’s “A” is reinvented by the sound from the repeated line pulled from the first stanza. You can also reinvent the rest of the rhyme sounds in that stanza as long as you keep the ABABCC scheme for that stanza).

--Meter: Pentameter

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Alignment

--Topic/theme
