Hello, I'm GeminiGem🐾 Author Icon, and I am the guest editor for this edition of the Short Stories Newsletter. Let's talk about those oh-so-restrictive word count limits!

I'm Calling You Out

Word count limits can be a real pain in the...creative process. I know because I've seen the grumbles from the WdC members who list that as a reason why they don't enter contests. People don't want to worry about the word count when they are crafting their short story or they feel most contest word contests are too restrictive.

I get it. I have watched my word count grow as my story progresses, knowing full well I will have to go back with the proverbial axe and hack away at my budding masterpiece.

Here's the thing. As painful as the bite of that axe is, it is rarely a bad thing to tighten up my prose. It forces me to take a hard look at parts of my story that I originally thought were solid and look for ways to improve. (*Takes a deep breath*) My writing. (*Small, sad sigh*) To improve my writing. (*Exhales sharply*)

Wait, what? Did I just say that word count limits force me to improve my writing? Yes, yes I did. I said what I said. So, if you still want to complain about the word limits of contests, I say to you this: what are you afraid of? Improving your writing?

Ooooo, them there's fightin' words. Care to take me up on that challenge? Consider yourself called out. Enter a contest, embrace the word count limit. Write your best short story with the count you are given. I double dog dare you...
