About This Newsletter

Kidnapping causes a long-term rupture in the psyche of those kidnapped and of those who wait for their return. It doesn't end.
~ Uzodinma Iweala

When I was kidnapped, my parents snapped into action. They rented out my room.

Letter from the editor

Amber Alert is the main alert in the States for kidnapped children. Some people like to nap kids, I guess. There isn't a known alert for adults. If kids are kidnapped, shouldn't adults be adultnapped? I should probably leave that for the professionals to figure out.

I've had a very different idea for this newsletter, but when you worry about someone it's hard to let things go. Hence, sharing the concern with you. Recently - because by the time you read this it'll be few weeks passed - I've received an email from a friend with the subject line "Kidnapped!" Now, we've emailed back and forth almost on a daily basis since I came back to Writing.com. I looked forward to our chats, the discussion of different subjects, and of course, as all girls do, gossip and complaining about the things in life.

The email was expected, so when I saw the subject line, I was a bit surprised. She, who shall remain unnamed for now, stated that her husband had a surprise romantic getaway weekend planned for her. A two or three day trip at the most. She'll be in and out - because Writing.com can be a bit addictive - but she'll be back soon to tell me all about it. I wished her safe travels and to enjoy the time away.

I mean, what's so unusual about getting away for the weekend? With the one you love? We all deserve it sometimes. The need to change the scenery, to make sure the fire is still burning bright between two people, to not worry about work but rather live in the moment. It's a must.

This was over a week ago and yet nothing. No sign of life. Both of these people are rather prominent and most likely very much known in their community due to their work. They cannot simply disappear! She cannot just go poof!

Of course, here I am, a mediocre writer with a very vivid and crazy imagination. What do you think goes through my head while I wait for an email from my friend? The worst case scenario. Naturally.

*QuestionW* Could the bad weather been a factor?
*QuestionBr* Have there been any tornadoes in her area?
*QuestionR* What if something bad happened to them?
*QuestionGr* What if they slid off the road somewhere?
*QuestionY* What if her husband had different plans for her?!

What if, what if, what if?! It doesn't stop. WdC has always been our only way of communicating, which means I have no other way of contacting her. Unless she contacts me. Until she signs in and emails me, I'll fret and worry. Once she does show up again - and I'll cling to that conviction - I'll be able to relax.

However, I'd like to know your thoughts. If you were in my shoes, what would you do? If you're looking at this situation purely from a writer's standpoint, how would you solve the mystery of a friend's disappearance yet someone whom you've never met in real life?

*ExclaimB* Re-read all the emails exchanged and gather all important information
*ExclaimG* Go through their portfolio - any personal information you can gather
*ExclaimGr* You cannot get more info from the owner of the website, but you could ask for their help, voice your concern
*Exclaim* Contact the police - if you're sure where the person actually lived
*ExclaimO* Online search for missing people in a particular area
*ExclaimP* Hire a private investigator perhaps

How far and to what extremes would you have your character go in order to find the truth?

As mentioned before, I have an overactive imagination, which doesn't help in this case. Perhaps life threw a curve ball her way and she's unable to sign in. Life's circumstances in general could be the culprit. Or, she simply tossed me out like a dirty, old, wet rag, that's of no use to anyone anymore. Then again, I question all those thoughts and start from the beginning, creating a vicious circle for a mind-boggling game of questioning.

I also remember a similar circumstance a few years back where I was handed a curve ball in life and one day simply didn't show up. With it, I let many friends down, unintentionally, but I did. One in particular. I wouldn't have known, if it weren't for an email from her and now she, too, disappeared without a way of contacting her. So I sit here and wait for those friends knowing, yet still, in many ways hoping, they'll return soon.

Here's to solving the mystery of Kidnapped! Until next time.
