Epic Short Story in Ten Tomes

My writing journey started while playing Shadowrun, a tabletop role-playing game. The Grand-Master gave me and the other players the task to write a little introduction to our characters. He asked for a page and a half. Something that would give a little background and flavor to our characters.
Life happened and we never got to play again with the same players (distance, military service, families).

Once I had started working on my page, I couldn't stop. I spent hours upon hours imagining my fantasy world around my Shadowrun Street Samurai. He soon became his own person and the world he lived in stopped resembling the prescription of Shadowrun. I was making a whole new fantasy world. Nobody was allowed to read it. I guarded my precious words to keep all of it for myself. About a half million words in, I finally came up for air and wondered: What now? This is how I found Writing.Com. I was finally looking to get feedback from people outside of my head.

Fantasy writing is such a huge undertaking, there doesn't seem to be a way to do it without writing epic tomes with thousands of pages to tell it all. There are some fantasy short stories that work for most readers. There is enough fantasy out there that it can be expected that most everyone has a notion of what a dragons, gargoyles, or even what some little forest creatures that create mischief are. When fantasy brushes up against horror, it's even easier to tell a short story as vampires, werewolves, and even Frankenstein's monster have become mainstream fiction.

Creating a new world from scratch requires a lot more words than can fit on a few pages. The most famous fantasy world span several books and when they make it onto the screen, the movies are double the length of a normal movie and there are always three or more of them. If not in movie form, then a TV show with several episodes, each packed with things that get stranger by the moment.

As a fantasy reader, I often prefer the longer works as those enable me to spend more time in that world. As a fantasy writer, I have been unable to figure out how to stop. I don't think I will ever have a fantasy short story in me. There simply is too much to describe.

Do you prefer fantasy short stories or rather novels or even series?
