Come In

Being new to any place can feel intimidating. The anonymity of the internet makes it a little easier to step (virtually) into new spaces and look around. On Writing.Com, it quickly becomes visible that many here know each other for a long time as writing pals. Some have advanced from generic handles to using their first names. Some still have a generic handle, but many people here know them by their real first name. For a newcomer, the place can feel closed off to them.

That is simply not true though.

Everyone here was a newbie at some point. We all had our moment to figure out how things work. We all had to take a moment to understand the many options for writing, reviewing, and making friends this site offers.

Any newcomer to the site should open and read all the beginning emails that come in from the system. Those are chock full of information. Many questions on how to use the site are answered within those emails. All of that same information can also be fund in "Writing.Com 101Open in new Window.. Since that is all in book or document form, it's not interactive yet.

A great place to start off to make friends is in "Noticing NewbiesOpen in new Window.. Only newbies can start a new thread, but anyone can answer.

To become a part of the community, newbies should start out by making good use of The Newsfeed  Open in new Window.. Many of us check out the community newsfeed periodically and will be able to answer some questions.

If you came here to get feedback on your writing, put it into your portfolio right away. There is a link set up that will feature your writing along with other newbie writers who have been on the site for less than 31 days. After that, your writing becomes part of the bigger pot and it's harder for people to find it.

Don't forget to take part in writing contests. You can find them on "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window.. Fun formats, great prizes, reviews, and camaraderie.

Are you unsure where to start?

Ask & Answer

Replies to my last Noticing Newbies newsletter "The NewsfeedOpen in new Window. that asked How often do you post on the Newsfeed? How often do you reply to posts there?

tracker Author Icon wrote: If you read this you don't need to post it. I have been a member for six years. I rarely write. The Newbie Newsletter is invaluable to me because I know little about the site. It is helpful to be aware of the elements of writing. This is the first I am still unclear how to use the Newsfeed. Is that where you want to leave a link to your latest story? Six people have viewed my story today. I have no clue where they saw it. I have so many takeaways I want to thank you for. I now know what gamification is. I know the importance of the tense of a verb and much more thanks to the Newbie newsletter. There may or may not be users like me who come, sit awhile, look at all the fun things to do here, then need a nudge via an email, to come back. It is not that I don't love it here. It is that I write at four sites and am not able to keep loyal to all.
Thank you for your words of wisdom. The Newbie Newsletter adds value to my writing experience. Much appreciated.
