Letter from the editor

Read, Read, Read!

Many published writers offer advise to others, and a key piece of advise I've heard often is to read. Reading can help your vocabulary and understanding of what makes good writing. Many writers will say it's unavoidable - you must read. A lot.

I think that's one great benefit to hosting a contest or activity - it makes reading an obligation (albeit, a fun one)! As long as you have the time to commit to hosting, I think it can be a great way to set yourself up with some reading material. It creates an opportunity for you to look at a piece of writing critically, thinking about how it is crafted.

Often when I judge for a contest, I have to read an entry multiple times. Particularly when it is well-written, and I enjoy it, I read it the first time just for the enjoyment of reading it. Then I will go back and look critically. Those are my favorite entries to read, the ones where I forget I'm judging it for a contest! *Wink*

Find your own technique with what works for you, but the way I like to review is to use the Review Tool to make notes while I'm reading the first time. Later, I can go back and elaborate on my notes. Think about what you like in a piece of writing and why you like it, and also what you think isn't working and why it's not working for you. Remember that a lot of writing is subjective and experiences can vary with each reader and writer. Just because you don't like it, doesn't mean it's necessarily wrong. (That's a lesson I still struggle with sometimes)

I really think that hosting a contest or activity can be a great way to find reading material and, as a bonus, help other writers at the same time!

Take care, and as always, keep on writing! *Quill*

Feedback from my last newsletter "Contests & Activities Newsletter (January 11, 2023)Open in new Window., which discussed finding your family:

I had to...had to leave a review. One of things I love seeing other WDC Moderators, Members, or Staff providing newsletters or WDC public items reading and sharing the concept of sharing. Anyone can do a review and provide thoughts or harmful reviews but anytime you get a item to read that says write, create, be involved always gets me in for a optimistic reaction. I enjoyed reading where you are encouraging others to be involved and create even their own group. It all seems to be good and I enjoyed reading that for other's to write. Thanks for the optimism in this newsletter.

Thank you! *Bigsmile*

This concept was one of Isaac Asimov's themes, with the detectives Elijah Bailey and R Daneel Olivaw investigating a murder among a society based on the avoidance of face-to-face contact, using holographic images or robots to communicate. The Naked Sun, copyright 1956 in Astounding (serial), printed in book form the following year.
