You're Not Tripping
am not one of those "frequent flyers", but I have done enough air travel over the years to have my share of stories. The severe winter weather caused some horrendous traveling conditions over the Christmas holiday. Were you caught up in any of that? I wasn't, personally, but one of my co-workers was. She had hassles from the moment she parked her car at the shuttle lot, checked her bags at the airport, then eventually never got on a flight to her destination. She could not get her checked luggage back at the time because the whole system just broke under the strain of the cancellation chaos.
She finally got a notification that her luggage had been sent to her via Fed Ex. Whew. Except, not exactly "whew". Seems that my friend had packed some homemade tamales in her checked baggage to take to the family she was going to visit.
The tamales had been sitting in her luggage now for two weeks. She was dreading what she was going to find when she picked up her bags.
Travel tribulations can make for good, solid comedy in your writing if you can take a stressful situation and turn it into a funny story. You might be able to use your own experiences as a springboard. Not long ago I got stuck in a middle seat between a husband and wife (strangers to me) who competed to talk to me. Me, the introvert, who hates talking to random strangers in person, much less being in a weird situation like that. Why did they make me sit in the middle? There was definitely some sort of relationship dysfunction going on there, and they decided to drag me into it. Was it a funny situation? Maybe. In hindsight.
I refused to buy tickets for that airline again because of their barbaric boarding policy. No matter how soon we booked our flights, no matter how early we checked in, we ended up being in the last group boarding. What a terrible concept this is. It is truly an introvert's worst nightmare. For the flight home, they did the same thing to us, stuck us in the last boarding group. I was over it. I marched right up to the front of the line from general boarding. I looked the ticket-taker dead in the eye to challenge him to say anything about it. He took one look at me, checked me in, and let me pass. He chose to live to fight another day, wise man.
