What is your favourite Christmas movie? Have you watched them too many times already? It's not easy to find original festive content.
This week's Spiritual Newsletter, then, is here to encourage us Writing.Com members to do something about it.

I love this time of the year. Sparkling lights everywhere, fun decorations, fishing the cats out of my tree… It’s something a little different from the other months. As our ancestors knew, we need a source of light and hope to get us through the cold and dark, and the festive season gives us just that.
I like the carols and the hymns. The stories that we tell. I also love Christmas movies, but this year I’m not too certain what to watch. I’ve seen them all before – the good ones multiple times – and I’m not one to put them on ‘just because’. I’d love for there to be more stories, with some different festive content. By that I don’t mean those romantic comedies that are being churned out.
You know the ones, I’m sure: a woman from the city, often with some high-flying career, ends up in an American town where she meets a kind man who shows her the true meaning of Christmas. Conflict tends to come in the form of her city boyfriend, or perhaps she needs to save a farm/hotel/small business. In the end she’ll give up on her city life and live her happily ever after with the new guy. Bonus points if the new guy happens to be a prince/celebrity. They all follow the same basic pattern. You know what’s going to happen before you’ve watched the opening credits.
And that’s fine. If you want something nice and easy, you can’t go far wrong with a movie like that. You know what you’re getting. There won’t be any shocks and surprises. My mom’s currently quite happy watching this type of content as she recovers from a major surgery. I’m looking for a little more creativity, though… a bit more excitement. Unfortunately, it’s hard to find.
I’m not sure why there’s relatively little content about the holidays, considering the place they hold in our hearts. There’s such a wide range of possibilities, from the more traditional to movies like Gremlins, or animated content like Rise of the Guardians (which is really quite lovely; I recommend it). I shouldn’t have to enter debates about whether or not Die Hard is a Christmas movie (it probably is), or seek refuge in The Philosopher’s Stone because it’s pretty magical. I am, then, looking to you creative people out there for new festive stories. Have you written any? Do you know of any?
It is a special kind of gift we can give to the world when we fill others with a sense of joy and wonder. Times are tough. It’s easy to despair. We need stories of hope to help us through. I will follow my own advice, of course, and once I have handed in my final assignment of the year I will try to put pen to paper and write down a story I’ve had in mind for the past few Christmases. Whether it’ll work or not, I don’t know. It’s worth a try.
If you have a story, feel free to send it in. Even if not, I wish you happy holidays, whatever you celebrate. May you have a season filled with peace and love and laughter. I will see you in the next year.
All the best,
NaNoKit
