About This Newsletter

The word spirituality is impossible to define precisely. Spirituality points to moments that can’t fully be captured in words. Some people have said these moments are like an “oceanic feeling” because the experience feels as big as an ocean. Others call it a “peak experience” or a “religious experience.”.

Regardless of what a person calls it, it’s clear that people around the world have these experiences.

Have you?

Letter from the editor

When I say 'spiritual experience', I'm not referring to one's belief (or disbelief) in God. I'm referring to a tangible force deep within that feels undoubtedly spiritual and broadens your mind in a substantial way, stimulating a higher functioning clarity of mind.

This week, let's look at a couple of examples that might be classified as a 'spiritual experience'.

Synchronicity

Synchronicity is defined as an "experience of meaningful events in one's life that are so timely in occurrence it feels as though some hand of fate or destiny is involved."

Synchronicity usually happens when we have a thought or desire for some new direction we'd like to take in life. Maybe a job change, getting in or out of a relationship, or just resolving a problem of some sort. Then sometime later, we meet someone, see something on the computer, or notice a story in a magazine that eerily gives us the exact information we need to move forward. (Not to be confused with the eavesdropping of Google, Alexa, or algorithms, lol.)

Your Intuition

We all have 'inner thoughts' and get 'gut reactions' that are meant to steer us in the right direction. Some people refer to this feeling as a "hunch," and usually have a sense of urgency to take an action of some kind. Once we get into the habit of noticing and following our intuitive guidance, we will see changes in our lives.

Prayer

Prayer doesn't make sense to everyone. Some don't believe in a 'higher power'. Others think that if there's a God, he already knows our needs, so what's the point, right?

Prayer is an exercise of faith for many. There are some people that think of prayer as a form of meditation. When concerning spirituality, we actually feel the power welling up inside of us. The key to prayer is to deeply feel gratitude. When the gratitude is genuine, a feeling of power without any doubt sets in. Perhaps gratitude is the necessary element to integrate all these spiritual experiences into one sudden epiphany—a total embodiment of the divine presence within us.

Karma

You know the saying, 'what goes around comes around'. Positive karma comes directly from helping others with sincerity and in the best interests of others.

Spirituality points to connection, awe, purpose, and meaning. It's important to remember that each person finds these in different ways and all are valid.

Comment from "Let's Celebrate our SimilaritiesOpen in new Window.:

"Hey Lilli- I applaud you for bringing this topic to the community. From what you've demonstrated, it seems apparent (to me at least) that Christianity, Judaism, and Islam began as a single religious tradition. Perhaps as populations grew, peoples traveled and languages changed, and the traditions, names, and stories changed with them. I'm saddened when information like this is rejected outright by deeply religious people worried their beliefs are being threatened, when they might actually grow stronger with each other knowing their God, 'in the beginning' was the same."
