About This Newsletter

*Crazy* Hey folks who like to laugh or who write to make us laugh! I am flying by as a guest editor with a quirky bit of fun that I just discovered. Do you like jokes? Can you create them? Enjoy a peek at some of our ancient jokes from the oldest known joke book! *Wink*

A physician gave orders to a pedant who
had an operation on his throat that he
should not talk. He directed his servant
to welcome visitors instead of himself.
Then he said to each one, "You will not
take this as an insult if my servant greets
you instead of myself, for the doctor has
forbidden me to talk."

*Bigsmile*

A pedant was quarrelling with his father
and said to him, "You wicked fellow, do
you not understand how much injury you
have done to me? If you had never been
borm I should have inherited my grand-
father's estate."

*Rolleyes*

A pedant asked his father, "How much
does a five-cup flask hold?"

Just For Laughs....from ancient times!

*Question* Did you know that jokes have been around for millenium? Humour is so human and so subjective.

I recently came across this ancient joke book called the Philogelos which means Love of Laughter . It is known to be the oldest "existing" collection of jokes. It is written in Ancient Greek, attributed to Hierocles and Philagrius in the 4th century. It is not the earliest collection as there are historical references to jokes in the second century BC.

A Cumsean was in swimming when it
began to rain and in order not to get wet
he went down into the deep water.

*Books1* This book contains 265 jokes under subjects such as "teachers and scholars, and eggheads and fools."*Rolleyes**Confused* Some of them we may not readily get unless we understand the times. *Wink*

A certain person said to a pedant, "Lend
me a cloak as far as the field." He re-
plied, "I have one as far as the ankle, but
I do not possess one as far as the field."

*Party* In 2008 British comedian Jim Bowen used some for stand up comedy *Shock* and some say that this joke could be an ancestor of Monty Python's Dead Parrot Sketch! *Bigsmile*

A certain person meeting a pedant said,
"The slave you sold me died." "By the
gods," replied the other, "he never did such
a thing when he was with me."

*Quill* The National Museum of Language in Maryland has an exhibit of the "Philogelos, The First Joke Book" in cartoons created from the translations of the book! I have included a link below as pictures are copywrited. *Wink*

A certain person asked a pedant, who
had a horse for sale, if it had thrown
once (i.e. shed its first teeth, or was ma-
ture). When the latter answered that it
had thrown twice, he asked, "How is
that?" The pedant replied, "Once when
he threw me and once when he threw my
father."

*Glassesy* Read more for yourself and see where YOU get a laugh! Or see where some ring familiar to some jokes and topics today! Some of them just passed me by! *Laugh*

*Crazy* So there is your laugh or eyerolling for today! Funny stuff is where you find it and everything is a potential subject. Have you ever created your own joke or pun? I do not have that strong a funny bone myself, and it would be fun to hear what you might dream up.

Have a laugh today whatever else you do! Til next time,
eyestar

This is a great site to see the cartoons based on the jokes. The language may be more in tune with our times.
