April Showers – Sad Poetry

With the sunshine in our lives, there must also be the rain. And when it rains (or after the rain), poets will very often write sad poetry. The sad poetry can be about yourself, someone else, something in your past, or present—even an imagined future.

The great things about writing sad poetry is that we can all relate to the sadness, and often to the situation itself, depending on the situation, of course and it can be a form of catharsis, or a stage of grief, or more—because poetry is cool like that.

Don't forget, just because you write it, doesn't mean you have to share it, so feel free to to just let your sadness flow into your work.

I would be remiss if I didn't share a mental health resource, as well. Sometimes sadness is temporary and sometimes it's a more serious mental health condition. Please know that there is help out there and it's okay to ask for help: https://www.samhsa.gov/find-help/national-helpline

Pathya Vat

The Pathya Vat is a Cambodian poetry form. I selected it because it has a lot of four references and seemed appropriate for the fourth month of the year.

MUST HAVES

--Line count: 4 if one stanza.

--Meter: Syllabic, 4 syllables each line.

--Rhyme in the following format: ABCB

COULD HAVES or WHAT IS THE POET’S CHOICE IN ALL THIS?

--Number of stanzas: Usually only one, but it's your choice. If more than one stanza, you will need to rhyme the last line of stanza one with lines 2 and 3 of the second stanza making the rhyme scheme: ABCB DBBE. If three then the rhyme scheme is: ABCB DBBE FEEG

--Alignment

--Topic/theme
