Rita: I like to see a man of advancing years throwing caution to the wind. It's inspiring in a way.

Phil: My years are not advancing as fast as you might think.

February Already!

Groundhog Day decides the next six weeks.

Groundhog Day is an American holiday in which a small brown creature, a groundhog, comes out of a hole in the ground and blinks into the daylight. The test is whether his shadow is visible or not. That shadow visibility will determine the weather for the next six weeks.

Does that mean Groundhog Day decides everything about the next six weeks?

Not at all. How your next six weeks of writing and reviewing will play out is entirely up to you. There are a bunch of activities that start at the beginning of February and there is new wind in the contests all over with new prompts.

This is a great time of the year to get a good bit of creative writing under your belt. If you wrote a NaNo last year, this is the perfect time to go in there, break that long thing up into neat little chunks and edit until you think it's as good as you can make it. Then, go ahead and revise some more.

If you did not write a novel in a month last year, this is the perfect time to get started on a novel this year. Or just enter every single short story and poetry contest you can get your hands on. Taking part in contests is really one of the best ways to get feedback for your writing since you are usually going to get at least one review.

Check out some of the listings below and also "Activities @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. and "Writing Contests @ Writing.ComOpen in new Window. to find out about all the fun, educational, and entertaining writing opportunities the next six weeks will hold for you.

How are you going to spend the next six weeks?

Ask & Answer

There was one reply to my last Contests & Activities newsletter "National noNovel Rebel MonthOpen in new Window.. "How are you going to rebel against NaNoWriMo?"

dogpack saving 4premium Author Icon wrote: I've been challenged by NaNo several times. What I learned the first time I attempted doing this activity is to write and keep the words flowing onto the screen no matter what. Allow my imagination to have a party of the outrageous, unique, unusual, and any kind it wanted to provide. Complete freedom is essential for accomplishing the task of writing 50K words or more in 30 days.
I've had success with NaNo as well as many other projects. Nano gave me the tools I need to write by the seat of my pants or to plan a project. It is worth making the attempt. You'd be surprised at what you can accomplish. "DOG NIGHTSOpen in new Window.
