Be Generous

Here we are, in a new year and full of hope and resolutions! And here I am with another newsletter. I've written one before on kindness. We could all use a little more kindness right now, don't you think so?

Now I'm asking you to be generous. If you're hosting a contest, I don't mean prizes. While prizes are nice and help members gain gift points to renew their membership, be generous with your reviews, comments, and with your advice. Help a newbie with formatting, help someone with passive voice by offering tutorial links so they can learn. A simple review is helpful with details, but help your fellow members become better writers.

If you're hosting an activity or participating in something...the most valuable thing you can offer is time. Be generous and encourage others. Be generous and friend a newbie. Be generous and help! And if someone helped you in the past, pay it forward.

The best way to get attention to your contest or activity is to get the word out. You can do so by networking with friends and other contest and group hosts. And don't forget to post your item in the appropriate contest or activity listing. I look forward to seeing all the activity and creativity this site produces each year.

Good luck and be generous! *HeartB*

#2251577 by CHRISTMAS cub-BELLS R RINGING! Author IconMail Icon

Excerpt: Write the first chapter of a book, inspired by the prompt.

There are no set rules on how many words are allowed in your chapter. If your first chapter is interesting and keeps the reader reading, word count won't be an issue. A wordy chapter that doesn't go anywhere, might need trimming. You won't be judged on word count but how you make your words count! Short or long, your first chapter is important. Set the tone, introduce your protagonist, set the scene, create a sense of what your main character is up against (conflict, obstacles, challenges.)

Last month's "Contests & Activities Newsletter (December 22, 2021)Open in new Window. question: What will you do differently in 2022?

Sumojo Author Icon: I always look forward to the official WdC contests the most. I suppose mainly because of the prizes offered. The Contest Challenge I have found has forced me to write In genres previously not even considered. I Write 2021 has seemed to fall a bit by the wayside this year. It’s a big ask I suppose to enter a contest or activity every week of a whole year. Not many of the original starters reached the end.
I certainly appreciate the time and commitment from the members who run contests and activities and always feel sorry when the don’t attract much interest. Often though the judging and the winner announcement is delayed, often for many weeks, causing people become less interested in contests these days. I find them a way for me to keep writing on a regular basis, although by this time of the year I must confess feeling a little jaded.

Max Griffin 🏳️‍🌈 Author Icon: We've changed the rules and added a more explicit prompt. Hope everyone enters!

bryanmchunter: If anything, try to keep my sanity since I know there are good things to look forward to; the return of Thomas Wooden Railway, Pac-Man Museum+, and the Jakks-Pacific action figures of Rouge the Bat and E-123 Omega, Shadow the Hedgehog's teammates from Sonic Heroes.

tybo777: Dunno, but I’ll keep on trucking.

ErinLynn Author Icon: In 2022, I will open my ears to hear the comforting whisper of the Word of God and my heart to feel His healing presence.

JCosmos Author Icon: resuming traveling
first to Chejudo never been to hike the famous ole round island trails
then to DC, Boston to explore New England - not spent too much time there
then to Oregon, side trip to Bay Area, maybe LA and Baja California
an in October perhaps hiking the Scottish highways trecking trails.

COVID and Fire Gods permitting of course.

0ofie Author Icon: My main goal is to work more on acquiring the opportunity to have my dream job. Writing. So I'll having to sit down and work on something everyday even if it's research on a specific time period or something.
It feels like that's what I'm truly meant to do.

elephantsealer Author Icon: I think I shall do better in 2022. I mean, I think I should write more...

Santeven Quokklaus Author Icon: Well, now that I've graduated from university again, I guess what I'll do differently is look for work as opposed to studying?

graybabe Author Icon: Trust in God more. This year I've been tormented by crushing doubts about my future and my family's welfare. I've prayed and prayed. So far we're doing ok. That's God working in our lives. Everything works out for the best, I pray.

Lynn Nichole Author Icon: I have already begun making some much-needed lifestyle changes. I am getting organized in several areas, and I am preparing to write more and differently.

Happy to write Author Icon: Seek help more often from people who are willing and able to help me become the person I want to be.

dragonwoman Author Icon: Keep in touch with family and old friends more often.

MaxBwrites78 Author Icon: I will work out more and write more.

darkscape: Finish this book!

anna banana Author Icon: Keep my journal going and write more.
