Letter from the editor

I started writing this newsletter on Black Friday. In fact I was searching for a couple items online. During my search I checked out the reviews of the items in question. Do you check out reviews before you buy?

It got me thinking about my time here on Writing.Com. I joined the site in May 2008. I checked out some of the reviews about WDC before I upgraded to a paid membership less than a month later. These reviews are called Testimonials, which may be found at https://www.writing.com/main/testimonials.

As stated in Writing.Com’s Reference Guide, testimonials provide visitors a glimpse inside our site and its community. With more than 1,000 comments, Writing.Com is proud to have one of the largest collections of testimonials anywhere online.

A testimonial is one member's personal success story. Their story doesn't have to be long. Some are only one sentence. But they come from the heart. Have you ever read any Testimonials?

Click on the Testimonials link. Read through a couple. Honestly, many have some pretty good ideas mixed in with the positive comments about the site.

On that note, one month from today Writing.Com will host it’s first official contest of the year—Dear Me. Official contests are open to paid members of any level. The Dear Me contest allows those members to define his or her writing goals for the coming year and how these goals may be achieved.

Letters submitted to the Dear Me contest should be full of creativity and insight, something into which every writer must tap to achieve full potential. Many of the testimonials I read through had no shortage of writing ideas designed to stimulate a writers fancy. Of course, many of you have many ideas of your own to chart your writing future. And just because you have a free membership and are ineligible for the official contest, that shouldn't stop you from penning your own Dear Me letter to map out your 2022.

Back to the testimonials. I noticed a few things while reading some of the testimonials. First, there are more than 1100 testimonials. While they may be considered a larger such collection for online sites, I feel it's a small representation of our total membership.

Second, none are dated. I mean many members wrote their testimonial some years back often shortly after joining WDC. While they may have risen in the member ranks to become Preferred Authors or higher, their story remains the same.

Finally, click on the Survey link, "Send Your Testimonial!Open in new Window. to submit your own testimonial. While on this page you have the opportunity to let the world know about Writing.Com by submitting your testimonial to a couple off-site links approved and encouraged by WDC.

Think about how WDC has impacted your writing journey, and consider writing a personal testimonial. Don't you have something worth sharing? I think I'll go add my own testimonial.

Write on!

Ask & Answer

Thanks for spending time with me today. At the bottom of every newsletter is a section entitled

*Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet* Don't Be Shy! Write Into This Newsletter! *Bullet* *Bullet* *Bullet*

followed by a text box. If you liked what you read (or if you didn't), please take time and drop me a line. I'd love to hear your ideas.

From the mailbag:

From dogpack saving 4premium Author Icon: I remember finding WDC and joining many years ago. I have no regrets except that I didn't find WDC sooner. After joining, I did my usual when finding a new website, I explored every nook and cranny I could find. Yup, It was quite an enjoyable adventure for me. My sense of adventure has helped me strike out on my own and find whatever I could about WDC. AS long as you don't delete it, you should be able to find it. I can't and won't delete WDC, so my advice is to go all around the website and enjoy your adventure.

I followed much the same path, poking into several new links each day. This was pre-"Writing.Com 101Open in new Window., so my options were explore ... or bug the heck out of everyone for help. I chose the former.

From the Newsfeed:

From TheBusmanPoet Author Icon: I don't ask anyone personally. I just read different articles and others writings and see if I can learn anything.

From Scifiwizard Retired Author Icon: It really depends upon the type of issue I am having. Nine times out of ten, I ask a fellow member or leave a message on the technical support forum.

From tybo777: Anyone you KNOW you can trust. Or just ANYONE if you're a newbie.

It goes to show, there's no wrong way to find help.

From elephantsealer Author Icon: Depends on what kind of help I need. There is always the Master/Mistress at Writing.com...

That's true--the SM and SMs are willing to answer members' queries. But with their heavy workload just operating the site, let's not forget about on-site friend and members, especially those more established, Mods and Senior Mods, and the help forums.

From Anna Marie Carlson Author Icon: I turn to other members of Writing.Com and the support team.
