Summer Stories

*Sun* The long days of summer with kids home from school are upon us. I will be the first to admit that this is falling a little flat this year. At least where I am, the kids have been home for over a year. Once the school year is over though, they will not even have to learn online.

*Sun* Many people will be able to take some time off work this summer. The writers among us might be more busy with leisure things, or less busy. No matter which one it is, both hold promise for short story fodder.

*Sun* The break from the normal rhythm in summer can give you time to create new memories that turn into short stories. Because the time spent on vacation has a beginning and an ending, two major parts of a short story are built in. Now all that's left for you is to figure out what this summer's inciting incident is. What creates rising tension? What is the climax? And how do you resolve it all before summer is over?

*Sun* You can choose to be the stranger that comes to town and then leaves. You can welcome a stranger to town. You can go diving and be a human in the water. *FishB* *WaterDrop*

*Sun* If traveling or welcoming visitors is not practicable, then you can travel back in time. You can travel to a time when you were sent off to spend the summer with grandma or other relatives. Or you can turn the visit of a cousin for summer into a short story.

*Sun* Many American short story writers have summer stories that revolve around young people hanging out in cars close to lakes. Do you have such a story to tell? Was there any peril? Was it all harmless fun?

*Sun* Official kick-off is on June 21 for Summer Solstice. But as a writer, you get to make your own rules. Australia and New Zealand do it all the time! They don't even have summer when the Northern Hemisphere has summer! *Shock2* If it doesn't keep them from having summer blockbusters, then it shouldn't keep you from writing for summer before it's summer.

Ask & Answer

I received these replies to my last Short Stories newsletter "WorkshopOpen in new Window. Would you like to join a short story writing workshop?

Bikerider Author Icon wrote: I enjoyed your May 6th Short Story Newsletter. Novel and short story workshops require a big-time commitment. While I would join a workshop, I don't think I could commit to running or sponsoring one. Are there any short story or novel workshops on WDC?

Quick-Quill Author Icon wrote: I joined the Novel workshop on WDc twice. I respect the teacher so much and I got the plot for my first book from the first class I took. It has become a favorite among readers all over. In fact (tongue in cheek) the used copy is selling for $940 HAHA

After seeing the replies, I wondered how many read the newsletter that went with it. There were several resources listed in the editor's picks as well as a whole paragraph describing what a short story workshop could look like.
