Happy 20th Anniversary Readers and Welcome to WDC New members! You are here just at the right time for party. WDC is celebrating 20 years online! A phenomenon! You get to participate in the many activities and witness new additions to this ever evolving community. We have come a long way..right along with the development of online technologies to stay current and maintain a caring community structure for writers.
A place to start since the beginning:
"Noticing Newbies"
and
"Writing.Com 101" is the place to begin! It was created in 2010 and adjusts as we grow.
And for the PARTY games, look at the left side bar for the special Party Central link! Be amazed!
For this anniversary party issue,
I have chatted with a few Moderators, those with Blue Cases, who help out around the site and happy to answer questions and give guidance. They were once newbies like you and are writers like you who love to write and receive reviews as well. For fun I have asked them to share their wisdom.. what helped them evolve and grow!
Enjoy and muse on! |

20 years for an online community is truly a milestone and SM and SMS create a home for us all and members participating make it what has become today. Still relevant, growing, expressive, friendly, creative place to play, connect, share, write and participate as much or as little as you like. The space is here, now what we all put into it adds to the magic!
You have joined a community where there are still members active from its inception, a testament indeed to its value. Here is what some of our Moderators have to say to you..
🌕 HuntersMoon , a kind author of "Humor" , who often keeps us laughing!
"My advice has always been "Push yourself! Enter into any contest that interests you; check the Newsfeed often and comment. Never be afraid to ask anyone a question - especially anyone with a Blue Case. Let others know who you are and you'll find we're all on the same journey. That's what makes us a commUNITY."
Angus creator of the one and only "SCREAMS!!!" !
" DON'T BE SHY! Let your imaginations run wild, we've all had to start somewhere. And if you don't put your stories out there for us to read, then they won't get any reviews!"
THANKFUL SONALI Library Class! creator of "Dear Newbie" and newsletter contributor
"Have a lot of fun with writing, try new genres and styles, hone the style they already writing in, plunge into activities and contests and review others!"
She also suggests that we Value constructive feedback and ignore feedback that does not suit."
Sum1's Home who hosts "Anniversary Reviews"
Become involved. How?
1. Either through reviewing others, posting your work for review, and perhaps joining a group.
2. Be open to comments in reviews that offer advice.
3. Don't worry too much if someone doesn't like your work. You can't please everyone. Your first critic is yourself.
4. Realize you aren't the greatest writer, nor are you the worst. Strive to improve.
5. Don't overdo it though. In other words, don't get burned out on WDC within a couple of months.
6. Live your 'real' life also, so make time for that!
7. Most of all, have fun, enjoy yourself, and be happy!"
Lornda co-leader of "WdC SuperPower Reviewers Group" and creator of "The Humorous Poetry Contest" .
"Take your time and rely on "Writing.Com 101" to help you along with learning what the site has to offer."
A great key as we did not always have this thoroughly devised how to manual!
Lyn's a Witchy Woman --hostess of "Blog City ~ Every Blogger's Paradise"
Write even when you don't feel like it, because your muse will eventually get with the program.
Review every piece the same way you hope your own work will be reviewed. People appreciate honesty and sincerity the most.
Maryann creator of "WdC SuperPower Reviewers Group" , which celebrates 13 years this year.
Get involved, make friends, and have fun on WDC. A great way is to join a group. Review, and others will chat and maybe review your work. It's also fun to respond to newsfeed posts, and forums as well."
♥noVember tHiNg♥ . Also known as Hooves, a long time contributor and judge at the "The Writer's Cramp" .
"Find what you enjoy, have fun and grow your writing wings!"

Read other's works and leave reviews. Write at least 5 items for others to read. Join WDC Groups. Post what items in Newsfeed. Ask members any questions they have. Be respectable to others. If you receive a bad review, don't sling mud at the reviewers. Just say Thank you and you will take their advice into consideration or you can ignore the review. Introduce yourselves on the Newbies Page. Fill out your Bio Block. Fan members you like. Start a group of your own. Post your written items on the Review Request Page. Keep writing and reviewing. You will make friends and get your writing seen.

I've been around since September 19, 2002. Yeah, you could say I'm one of the oldsters, but back then we had dial-up with all it's beeps and clicks and reboots. Good times, for sure. Technology and WDC have come along way since then, but well, I remember when there were only a few contests, and The Milkman ran the "The Writer's Cramp" . It is 18 years old!
Those were the days. Happy Anniversary Writing.com!!!!!
A side note: The cramp was created by a senior Moderator Liz Peake, who passed it to The milkman and has been hosted by Sophurky since 2007 and many help judge it as a daily contest!
Prosperous Snow celebrating a long time member and contributor to the site newsletters.
" Keep writing. Review. If you have any question don't be shy about asking a moderator or posting it on "Writing.Com General Discussion" ."
Elle - on hiatus creator of "The Snail Mail Group" and now host of the "The Quill Awards"
"A member's case colour or the length of time they've been on this site does not in any way indicate where they are on their writing journey. Everyone progresses on their journey at different speeds, and you can judge their current position only by their writing. "
~Minja~ creator of "Little Mouse Loves to Read"
When I joined the site back in November 2013, my English writing and speaking skills were quite limited. As a foreigner, I knew what I wanted to achieve. I just needed the right place and the right people to help me. Turned out Writing.Com was even more than I expected. My advice for everyone, especially for those whom English is the second language, don't be afraid or turned off by asking questions if you don't know or understand something. Even if you think it's stupid and not worthy of mention. And more importantly, NEVER stop writing. If you are told that what you wrote isn't the best thing ever, learn to listen to constructive criticism instead of dismissing yourself and the others entirely. Only then you will be able to achieve big things with your writing. Writing might be a lonely job, but reading probably isn't. After all, we are members of this site because we want others to read what we write about. If this isn't true, we would keep our thoughts in a notebook on a
dusty shelf and in the hidden corners of our computers, away from the curious eyes.
Ẃeβ࿚ẂỉԎḈĥ creator of "The Witch's Garden "
"I remember 13 years ago, when I was a WDC Newbie. It was exciting to begin sharing my writing with others and to read and review what they had to offer. I had spent the first month on the Read A Newbie page seeing who else signed up at the time I did. I found my fears about sharing my work would soon disappear as I developed some friendships with those Newbies. We read and reviewed each other's work. Back then, I did not notice as many Newbie welcoming forums as exist now. Thus, I did it the old fashioned way, mingled with Newbies, on the Newbie page and found some long lasting WDC friendships that developed from that.
As we get ourselves acclimated to the WDC world, we spread our wings more, dare to review yellow and blue cases, and even the purple cases. Never fear giving your honest opinion in the kindest way possible. Hey, you may even step into a Red Case or two, and do a review.
My advice to Newbies, be patient, be kind, share a bit of humor. Never fear asking another member for help. Also, Mods are here to serve the community, answer questions or point you in the right direction.
May you find new friendships on WDC that will last for many years to come."
Notice the theme: Get involved! Have fun! Write on! Communicate! Be kind and have a sense of humour!
When I joined 10 years ago I learned by the seat of my pants...by doing and ASKING a lot of questions. Thanks to enthusiastic and helpful members of ALL case colours, I got the hang of things and continue to learn... especially the tech stuff. LOL You can be here a while and never get to the bottom of all the magics here... so many nooks and crannies to explore... and of course, as writing is our goal, that will be a big part of your time here. You carve it out...as you may soon get addicted to this new home...as many of us do.
So delve in. Go back and scroll through past NOTICING NEWBIE newsletters... so much cool details in a nutshell!
