Letter from the editor

I began writing for myself in college having become enthralled with an English writing course on Essays. Over the years I moved into Short Stories and Poetry as well. Like most writers I craved attention. And I was scared to share lest I receive a negative critique. A true dilemma.

I began cautiously showing my work only to close friends and family. They were my first Encouragers. Later, I realized their feedback was always positive. Well, with very few exceptions. I began to wonder if I was really as good as they said. In truth, my family and friends encouragers were precisely what I needed for my fledgling writing career. But I needed more.

Encouragers can be found among Teachers, Mentors, Colleagues, Agents, Editors and Readers. Mentors, colleagues and readers will probably be more prevalent on WDC.

Twelve years ago as I posted my first writings on WDC, I found readers who became colleagues, and some who developed into mentors. Over the years, I developed friendships as well. And along the way, I believe my writing improved.

Seek out folks with similar styles as yours. Pick their brains. Offer reviews of their work in exchange for reviews of yours. Read reviews of other members who write in your genre of choice, and look for reviewers who pen honest AND helpful reviews. Learn from their efforts.

Check out groups that interest you. Remember, you don't have to write in just one genre. Though you may write short stories, you might enjoy expressing yourself in poetry. Expand your comfort zone.

Finally, be an encourager yourself. Learn how to give encouraging, yet constructive reviews. You can be brutally honest--key word is honest--but NEVER mean or DIS-couraging. Give what you would like to receive. It often takes little to shake a writer's confidence. Write your review with the same patience and skill as you craft your stories.

One time I let a very negative review get to me and I stopped writing for several years. It took a long time to realize that I was better than that person who I let steal precious time from me. I've grown a much thicker skin since then.

Have faith in your abilities. Surround yourself with encouragers, and dismiss the discouragers. Then pass on your experiences to others.

Write on!
