Letter from the editor

Summer is the time for long hot days, vacation trips, picnics, swimming, and occasionally, mystery! Here are a few reasons why summer is an excellent time for a mystery story to take place.

Beautiful weather
When the weather is nice, people venture out of their homes and spend more time outside. When people are having fun outside, they might find evidence of a crime that was unnoticed during the winter.

No school
Summer is a great time for kids' mysteries. When your young detectives are not busy with school and homework, they will have more time to solve mysteries (and possibly get into trouble!).

Long days
When the days grow long in midsummer, people stay out later at night and may witness or take part in nefarious activities.

Vacation
When characters travel they may intend to have a nice relaxing vacation, but they might also end up in the middle of a mystery. Characters on vacation can potentially travel to mysterious places, meet interesting (or strange) people, and learn about intriguing local legends and unsolved mysteries.

Something to try: Write a mystery set in the summer that could not happen in any other season.
