Letter from the editor

Do you respect your work? Do you respect the owners of contests and judges? I've often been surprised at those who don't. I'm not saying everyone who participates in site contests and activities does this. Let's go back to some basics...

When entering a contest or taking part in an activity, read the rules. Read them again. Read them a third time. Make absolutely sure that your entry follows them. The judges and contest organizers put a lot of thought into this. You should too.

Did you:

*Blockr*Adhere to the word count?
There are often word or line count parameters in contests. Be sure your entry adheres to them.

*Blockr*Include your word or line count?
The rules will specify whether to put your word or line count in the body or in the subject line.

*Blockr*Does your work fall into the stated rating of the contest or activity? Double check that it does.

*Blockr*Did you double check the deadline?
Some contests run daily, others weekly, biweekly, or monthly. What time of the day is it due? Most contests and activities run on Writing.Com time. Be sure you get your entry in on time.

*Blockr*Is your work the best it can be?
Take pride in your craft. Don't enter a first draft. Work on it until you feel it is the best work you can put forward. Believe it or not I've had entrants tell me, "hey it's only a first draft." Seriously? You've wasted my time as well as show you're not serious about winning a contest. I'm a hobby writer but I want my work to be the best it can be.

I've been a stickler for rules in my own contests. I want to read good entries. I want to see the entrants shine. If rules are broken I won't give the entry a second thought. It shows disrespect for the contest, the judges as well as the author.

I want you to succeed! I want your work to shine! Carefully follow the rules. Read them again before submitting so you can correct anything that needs it. Have pride in your work and you'll enjoy the process all the more.
