King Cake

It tastes good and it's fun. Also has something hidden on the inside.

Where's the baby?

In New Orleans, Louisiana, the King Cake is associated with the pre-lent celebrations culminating on Mardi Gras. If you have never been to New Orleans during Mardi Gras season, you might think about figuring out how to go there next year. As a former resident of New Orleans, I am going to give you New Orleans's best kept secret. Go all the way to the beginning of the parade route. All the way back in the residential neighborhoods. You will be surrounded by locals. Although the sides of the streets are crowded, you won't get trampled or run over by a drunk horde of frat brothers.

This year's Mardi Gras was on February 25, but preparations for next year's Mardi Gras will start the day after Mardi Gras. Okay, maybe there will be a day in between to sleep off that hang over. But then it goes right back to fundraising, planning out the float decorations, planning out the costumes, and working hard to have everything perfect for the day of the parade when everybody has to know what to do for the whole day to go smoothly.

When do you make plans that detailed for your contests, activities, or contest entries? Be honest! You don't plan something for a year. Maybe you should! If you took your time, brainstormed with other people here on the site, and really worked hard on your contest or activity, you would run a show as smooth as the Mardi Gras parades in New Orleans.

The Quills! I know. And ... see how well that works. It works because so many people give it so much attention, time, and care.

Don't have a year to plan things out? Or do you run out of steam? Take smaller bites of the King Cake. Make a plan for the next month, or even the next week only. Cut your King Cake of writing & reviewing into as many small slices as you need to make it palatable and achievable for yourself.
